I can’t imagine anyone better to give voice to this novel than Juliette Stevenson; every character came alive in her reading of this first novel of Virginia Woolf.
And the novel itself? How is it possible that this is her first? It’s powerful and real. The writing is exquisite. Her observations of the world and her fellow countrymen are acute and accurate and uncanny and many still hold true. She was far ahead of her times.

It’s too simple - and it works.

Listen carefully and let go of your ‘self’. It’s an amazing practice and it can change your life. It’s changed mine.

This was a perfectly fun listen: great, laugh out loud story read with skill and emotion.

I listened to this book wondering if I might enjoy it more or find it more engaging if I was actively reading as opposed to listening. As it was, I finished it but never felt truly drawn in or moved by the story or the performance. It is a memoir but in the early chapters of the book I found it impossible to believe or countenance the insights and memories of the main character who was but 3 or 4 years old at that stage. The story became more credible as it progressed and I guess it is a testament to the fortitude and resilience of children but at the end I was left not really caring.
