Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Sad Life
Revisado: 08-15-24
Although the author was an actor, this was a case where the book would have been better served bty another. She simply did not have the distance from her pathetic life. At times, she seemed to be racing through a line as if she wanted to get it over with. I could understand that. It was a mostly sorry youth. What struck me was the very real possibility that she is not the only one out there with such a backstory. For that reason, the book was an eye opener.

The Truly Most Interesting Beatle
Revisado: 08-14-24
I had read on Audible the biographies of John and George first, inaccurately thinking those would be more interesting than Paul’s. I was wrong. This biography of Paul, performed impeccably by the reader kept me enthralled throughout its hefty length. I now realize like many people, I had not given Paul his due. He couldn’t be a deeper, more complex subject. All along I thought John was the one with the creative streak. Philip Norman, the author, who was also once so dismissive of Paul, has given readers a profound glimpse into the real talent and the admirable man who was known at first as the cute Beatle. Without him, there would be no Beatles. The four together, of course, made the perfect combination, but Paul was and still is the real artist and musician I had dismissed.

Hiking and Romance
Revisado: 07-11-24
I liked the banter and the adventure. I did not like the female narrator. She merged her words too much, for example, “I trite walk” instead of “tried to walk.” The male never gave me any trouble understanding. Because they switched back and forth, I adjusting the speed didn’t work. I would have liked to have read this book in print.

Historia
Despite being hailed as one of the best guitarists of his era, George Harrison, particularly in his early decades, battled feelings of inferiority. He was often the butt of jokes from his bandmates owing to his lower-class background and, typically, was allowed to contribute only one or two songs per Beatles album out of the dozens he wrote.

An Insightful Memoir
Revisado: 04-04-24
His story is the story of many neglected and abandoned kids in this country. But what makes this more than a memoir is his realization that the classic values of honoring the two-parent family, now being pushed aside by those in those families, are that which will most offer children stability.

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Shocking New Information
Revisado: 03-14-24
I simply did not know that the gender transition going on was affecting mostly adolescent girls. The stories from the girls who later regretted transitioning were poignant. Adults who were happy with their transition were also interviewed. Highly recommended.

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Review if The Mothers
Revisado: 01-03-22
The emotional thread in the book was certainly there, but I was never able to sympathize with Nadia, the main character. The story begins and ends with the church ladies gossiping about Nadia, who has had an abortion and whose mother has killed herself. Nadia is both motherless and childless, but the abortion has freed her to go to college and law school, leaving the baby’s father Luke, the pastor’s son, to marry Nadia’s best friend, Aubrey. Although the aborted baby never leaves Nadia’s imagination, living in her mind as a boy she calls Baby, Nadia never forgives Luke for leaving her alone at the abortion clinic. Yet, when her father is ill, she comes back and starts an affair with Luke, damaging his marriage. That is the beginning of a long string of incidents that tears everyone in the congregation apart and eventually brings it down completely. Nadia is sorry at the end, but that hardly makes up for the destruction her affair triggered. I was actually bored at the end.
