Historia
While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies....

Strongly recommend but with caveats.
Revisado: 12-28-24
This is an excellent book and the central thesis that links the decline and revival of the pre civil war South with the expansion of the West. The nexus, as Heather explains it, is quite compelling. For readers who share the author’s values (like me), the arguments and historical narrative confirm many of the your existing beliefs. However, the author’s monolithic view of “white men” is myopic and misleading. Many, many white men are as committed to restoring and sustaining the post WW2 liberal consensus as the author appears to be. Many white men, including me, have been and remain staunch advocates of women and minority rights. They also deeply oppose the de facto caste system that the author persuasively describes as the central achievement of movement conservatives. The author would be wise to widen the aperture when she discusses the political prerogatives of white men. Furthermore, the author’s treatment of cultural subject matter assumes that culture shapes the public’s political views more than the converse. Archie Bunker, John Wayne and his proxies, and other cultural media are successful at least in part because the subject matter and stories resonate with readers and viewers. Culture shapes people and is shaped by people but the author focuses almost exclusively on the shaping of people by culture and ignores the converse. Hollywood does not make movies for propaganda but for money. Similarly, the enduring popularity of some books and movies is not solely a result of enduring white bias. For example, Gone With the Wind is cherished by many for the love story it tells rather than its commentary on race relations in the south. Finally the book mostly overlooks the complicity of supposed champions of the liberal consensus with the rise of a cosmopolitan elite. Bill Clinton signed NAFTA and similar free trade agreements that have over the past 30 years hollowed out the middle class. Still worse, the author treats the grievances of those who lost more than they gained from the globalization of trade woodenly. Americans who live close to salt water seem glib about the corrosion of the middle class in the Midwest and other parts of the country’s interior. The loss of jobs due to globalization has devastated communities and ruined the lives of countless individuals.
The most obvious issue missing from this book is greed, and the lust for power that accompanies it.
So, this is a good book. I hope her next is great.

People are now exposed to more information than ever before, provided both by technology and by increasing access to every level of education. These societal gains, however, have also helped fuel a surge in narcissistic and misguided intellectual egalitarianism that has crippled informed debates on any number of issues. Today, everyone knows everything and all voices demand to be taken with equal seriousness, and any claim to the contrary is dismissed as undemocratic elitism.

Worse than your worst expectations
Revisado: 05-12-23
The author cannot provide a cogent and concise definition of an “expert.” He cites little if any basis for making sweeping statements. I could not endure this misanthropic mansplaining. Read the book “Range” for the declining value of “expertise” in an age of AI. Read Mastery for understanding “expertise.” This book is rubbish.

Serving as a powerful follow-up to Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life, Dr. Gad Saad unpacks what is really happening in progressive safe zones, why we need to be paying more attention to these trends, and what we must do to stop the spread of dangerous thinking. A professor at Concordia University who has witnessed this troubling epidemic firsthand, Dr. Saad dissects a multitude of these concerning forces (corrupt thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, etc.) that have given rise to a stifling political correctness in our society.

This book is ideological hogwash and xenophobia. I am a political independent and tend toward moderation more than liberalism or conservatism or any other ideological extreme. Books like this are dangerous. They are full of hate and glorify violence and discrimination.

Historia
The Great Game between Victorian Britain and Tsarist Russia was fought across desolate terrain from the Caucasus to China, over the lonely passes of the Parmirs and Karakorams, in the blazing Kerman and Helmund deserts, and through the caravan towns of the old Silk Road - both powers scrambling to control access to the riches of India and the East. When play first began, the frontiers of Russia and British India lay 2000 miles apart; by the end, this distance had shrunk to 20 miles at some points.

Each of the many stories included in the book are suspenseful and fascinating. The trouble is that the stories seldom support the arc of the book's intended hi historical narrative.

In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Historia
James M. McPherson, professor emeritus of U.S. history at Princeton, is one of the foremost scholars of the Civil War. In this informative and meticulously researched masterpiece, he clarifies the differing ways of life and philosophy that led to this shattering conflict. Abraham Lincoln wondered whether "in a free government the minority have the right to break up the government". And Jefferson Davis felt "forced to take up arms" to guarantee states' rights.

Historia
After the sudden death of her husband, Sheryl Sandberg felt certain that she and her children would never feel pure joy again. "I was in 'the void,'" she writes, "a vast emptiness that fills your heart and lungs and restricts your ability to think or even breathe." Her friend Adam Grant, a psychologist at Wharton, told her there are concrete steps people can take to recover and rebound from life-shattering experiences. We are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. It is a muscle that everyone can build.

Historia
In nearly every moment of our waking lives, we face a barrage of advertising enticements, branding efforts, sponsored social media, commercials, and other efforts to harvest our attention. Over the last century, few times or spaces have remained uncultivated by the "attention merchants", contributing to the distracted, unfocused tenor of our times. Tim Wu argues that this is not simply the byproduct of recent inventions, but the end result of more than a century's growth and expansion in the industries that feed on human attention.
