Historia
Daniel J. Boorstin, the bestselling and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Americans, introduces us to some of the great pioneering seekers whose faith and thought have for centuries led man's search for meaning. Moses sought truth in God above while Sophocles looked to reason. Thomas More and Machiavelli pursued truth through social change. And in the modern age, Marx and Einstein found meaning in the sciences.

This book is one of an amazing trilogy but I would avoid this abridged edition like the plague. It totally ruins a beautifully crafted history.

Historia
Larry Ott and Silas “32” Jones were unlikely boyhood friends. Larry was the child of lower middle-class white parents, Silas the son of a poor, single, black mother - their worlds as different as night and day. Yet a special bond developed between them in Chabot, Mississippi. But within a few years, tragedy struck. In high school, a girl who lived up the road from Larry had gone to the drive-in movie with him and nobody had seen her again.

Mississippi pure and simple
Revisado: 07-31-12
What did you like best about this story?
This story meanders like a Mississippi conversation and comes, without fanfare, to a wonderful denoument. The characters are beautifully developed and Mr. Franklin manages to side-step all those stereotypes that lurk in the wings for stories told about the South.
If you could rename Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, what would you call it?
I would not rename it at all. I learned to spell Mississippi exactly that way.

The author of Cod and The Basque History of the World takes an extraordinary look at an ordinary substance — salt, the only rock humans eat — and how it has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

An unexpected pleasure
Revisado: 07-31-12
What made the experience of listening to Salt the most enjoyable?
Mark Kurlansky has given us a wonderful history a most common and important condiment complete with surprising facts, cases of intrigue, and ancient and modern recipes. I listen to audiobooks on my commute and found myself impatient for the day to be over so I could get to the next chapter.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Salt?
The picture of the heat and damp and darker than night dark inside a salt mine will stay with me for a long time. Our family refers to work as going to the salt mines but my job is a walk in the park compared to the real ones.
Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I look for Scott Brick's performances. He always reads in a clear and interesting voice and gets most foreign words correctly...except maybe French: but which of us doesn't have imperfections?
Any additional comments?
The title may seem a bit dry, but this is a wonderful adventure.

So much of our human body is made up of salt that we'd be dead without it. The fine balance of nature, the trade of salt as a currency of many nations and empires, the theme of a popular Shakespearean play... Salt is best selling author Mark Kurlansky's story of the only rock we eat.

There the inspector finds two young lovers, dead for 50 years and still embracing, watched over by a life-sized terra-cotta dog. Montalbano's passion to solve this old crime takes him on a journey through Sicily's past and into a family's dark heart.

Where does The Terra-Cotta Dog rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
How can one compare The Terra-Cotta Dog to Boomerang...the last book I read? TCD stands alone as a lovely and many faceted story.
Have you listened to any of Grover Gardner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Grover Gardner was the first person I ever heard read. (Survive the Savage Sea) His performances are consistantly good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Wanted to? I did listen to this all in one sitting! My idea of a perfect stormy Saturday is to spend the day knitting and listening to a great book.
Any additional comments?
I wouldn't call myself a mystery lover and am relatively new to Inspector Montalbano mysteries but I am beginning to understand why he's inspired such a following.

We live in a world of great and increasing complexity, where even the most expert professionals struggle to master the tasks they face. Longer training, ever more advanced technologies - neither seems to prevent grievous errors. But in a hopeful turn, acclaimed surgeon and writer Atul Gawande finds a remedy in the humblest and simplest of techniques: the checklist.

Challenges to Western Medicine
Revisado: 01-30-12
Would you listen to The Checklist Manifesto again? Why?
Western medicine is in a very difficult position right now. Patients are often treated like a collection of symptons rather that a total person. Doctors are called on to perform to high standards of efficiency rather than of compassion and competence. Atul Gawande has thought a great deal about this problem and formulated a solution to deal with these problems ...or at least some of them. He borrows from other disciplines to come up with a basic routine that should work in hospitals around the world. It's certainly worth a second read.
What did you like best about this story?
Gawande describes how various professions deal with problems similar to some of those in the modern operating room. He offers anecdotes about each profession and then tells us how those solutions were adapted to eight very different hospitals in diverse parts of the world...and he is not above telling us stories of his own failures and challenges to illustrate his point.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Since this is a work of non-fiction, I think it would not be considered for a film. For a film about the challenges of surgery, one might consider
Any additional comments?
I like Gawande a lot. He has written lots of articles for The New Yorker on similar subjects. When anyone currently involved in the practice of medicine is willing to admit that the system has been run off the rails and is willing to apply his intelligence to constructive solutions rather than just ranting...it's worth our attention. Besides, he's fun and easy to read.

An old favourite revisited
Revisado: 12-19-11
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to be better than the print version?
I can't value audiobooks above print ones...it just doesn't seem right...but I love my commute now that I have them. We read all the Narnia books to our kids when they were young and this is a really pleasant rememberance.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe?
The first Turkish Delight scene is always great.
Have you listened to any of Michael York’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first time I've listened to a book read by Michael York but I will definitely look for him again. He brings great life to this wonderful story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
All in one sitting? No, thank you. I like to enjoy my books in slowly, over days; it gives one time to think about what's just happened.
