I’ve listened to more than a hundred books on Christian history and/or theology in the last couple years. This was my favorite, in part because the author is an intellectually honest historian with both an insightful grasp of the work of other scholars and his own fresh perspectives and research. I often find myself hesitant to recommend a book because it either devolves into indulgent pet theories or retreads ground already well covered by other authors. This book falls into neither trap. It’s lucid, thorough, original without being fanciful, impeccably crafted, and superbly narrated by the always excellent Bob Sauer. Thirteen years after release, it remains a fresh and formative look at Christianity for devotee and critic alike.

I appreciate the many excellent examples that help explain how scripture is both more complex and more interesting than it might first appear reading through Western eyes.

This book is valuable both theologically and pragmatically for both disabled and non-disabled Christians. Prepare to feel all the feels. But you won’t be sorry.

Well-rounded explanation of atonement

What sets this treatment of atonement apart from others is how it shows the necessary interrelatedness of different perspectives on the subject. In summary, Jesus saves by: representing humanity and getting it right; by vicarious justice; by claiming victory against death and evil; and by exemplary self-giving love. I would not have immediately seen how intertwined these four “models” are. I also listened to his more scholarly audio lectures, also available on Audible. Those are a bit chewy but still fun to listen to, and a great window into other scholarship with more background and logical development.

What the author calls the Black Ecclesial Tradition stands out in my view as the least theoretical, best tested, and most demonstrably substantial manifestation of Christian Faith in North America. Many thanks to the author for giving that tradition definition and voice. McCaulley makes clear that his primary audience is his own community, but I believe for any American seeking to understand how to be shaped by the biblical witness in practical terms, the tradition he describes offers the most tangible and compelling model. Lots to learn here.

The Cure: What If God Isn't Who You Think He Is and Neither Are You? Audiolibro Por Bill Thrall, Bruce McNicol, John S. Lynch

Clear, accessible, good news

This book tells the good news of God’s grace and love, not as a set of naked principles but as a story of what it’s like to experience that love and grace as we mature in our trust of God. It’s a book clearly written from experience, given the relatable nuance.

If you are Christian, you might discover that the good news you’ve received (even if the word “grace” is a major part of your vocabulary) pales in comparison to the good news described here. If you ever secretly wonder “why isn’t my relationship with God what I want it to be,” this book likely can help.

I thought the authors did a good job of weaving the gospel into a narrative of personal experience (so it doesn’t feel preachy), while making that experience metaphorical enough that it’s easy to find oneself in it. The narration is a little quirky in a fun way—a woman voicing a man, sounding boyish.

Looking forward to relistening to this!

McKnight, and Matchett present the Revelation as a timeless creative work, meant to orient the heart and mind of the church toward Christ as Lord rather than becoming enslaved to the “Babylons” of every age. Another reviewer mentions resenting the last portion of the book, in which evangelical nationalism is depicted as the American church losing sight of the lamb and falling under the thrall of one of many modern Babylons. This is just one way in which this book is challenging—in the same way Revelation itself was meant to be challenging to the church.

While I will admit to some cathartic pleasure at Hart’s poetic evisceration of his opponents, I would have appreciated less ridicule and more respectful refutation. I would expect a Christian response to the new Atheists to manifest generous neighbor-love and enemy-love, regardless of how foolish they are. That said, Hart has important perspectives to share, and I thoroughly enjoyed his artistic writing. At 1.2x the narration was just fine for me.

Bauckham’s overview is thorough, providing excellent high level information on Jesus as a historical figure and founder of the Christian faith. This short book fluidly blends accounts from the biographies of Jesus with helpful historical context. The language is unfortunately a bit professorial, and likely to be confusing to anyone with less than a college education. Bauckham is one of the world’s top biblical scholars.

Heiser does not say “here’s what I think and here’s how the Bible backs up my ideas.” Instead he diligently and carefully uncovers what the biblical authors thought, and why. The result is something considerably more surprising and compelling than I would have imagined. It appears there is such a thing as a “biblical supernatural worldview” shared by, and carefully and faithfully developed by, authors from Genesis to Revelation. The words and actions of Jesus were perfectly consistent with that worldview. The narrative coherence across biblical authors and books is stunning.
