Not the movie, too many repetitive details and didn’t age well

While it was nice to get details that didn’t make it to the movie, I found the overall writing to be wordy and repetitive. And his clinical descriptions of anything related to sex made me uncomfortable. I had such high hopes to read this and I was really disappointed.

I love the book and story, but I don’t enjoy the (over) acting and interpretation of the writing.

Great story, but too much history and geography for me

This is a great story. This type of book is not necessarily in my wheel house, so keep that in mind while reading my review. I decided to get this book because it’s one of the books most often recommended by Ryan Holiday.

I found this to be frustratingly long and slow. The story *is* amazing. But listening to this book is difficult but there was so many pivots to Russian history. There is so much about Russian geography. And then there are the actual Russian names. It was hard for me to follow (but again, I’m not a history or geography buff).

Overall, I definitely have a greater appreciation for tigers. But my actual retention of the subject matter within this book is pretty minimal.

This is a great book for those at the start of their careers, parenthood, etc. or those well immersed in their life but are looking for some new approaches to finding more success. It's very broad, but very actionable.

Sobering insight to poverty living conditions

This is a very powerful and educational book. For anyone who thinks the poor can just decide to have a better life, they need to read this. It's shameful and depressing what the poor have to live with, especially when you consider it's minorities. I'm glad Matthew Desmond produced this amazing work. I just wish there was a more hopeful and optimistic solution.

Some good advice, some fear mongering, too much religion for me

There is good, practical advice in this book. But I’m not religious and I don’t want to be. While I don’t appreciate the author saying I or my daughter needs religion/God, I see her side. If you are Christian you will probably love this book.

I was not a fan of readers inflections.

The author, IMO, grossly overstated certain risks. Or at least, she makes it sound like there’s groups of people saying teen sex, teen plastic surgery is ok. Almost like people campaign for these things being ok. I don’t think that is the case. I think parents just make stupid decisions.

Finally, I found the authors take on “men are practical and level headed” and “women are too emotional” both surprising and disappointing.

Some books are better read than listened to. I think this falls into that category. While I enjoyed the content and learned from it, the audio/words/vocabulary is pretty repetitive. Also, the reader overacts the reading. I didn’t realize that was possible. Might not bother many, but I found it obnoxious.

Easy to digest in several sittings. Can serve as a great intro to stoicism, too (it certainly was for me).

This book should help us all know and appreciate there’s always going to be obstacles in life (at school, at home, at work, etc) and we have the ability to decide how we will respond to these obstacles.
