When Yousif Tlaib asks about his mom's new job in Congress, his older brother, Adam, fills him in—with some help from Rashida Tlaib herself. As he tells his mom’s story, Adam reveals information about how elections and our government work, what it means to break barriers, what motivates their mama to work for justice for all, and how love and family have guided them through this historic time in our country.

INSPIRING AND HEARTWARMING
Revisado: 09-21-22
Seeing Rashida through her son's eyes is so sweet. This is a beautifully written account of her devotion to others as well as her family's struggles to get where they are today. I can't wait to read it to my children.

Historia
In Healing Politics, El-Sayed traces the life of a young idealist, weaving together powerful personal stories and fascinating forays into history and science. Marrying his unique perspective with the science of epidemiology, El-Sayed diagnoses an underlying epidemic afflicting our country, an epidemic of insecurity. And to heal the rifts this epidemic has created, he lays out a new direction for the progressive movement. This is a bold, personal, and compellingly original book from a prominent young leader.

Predictable
Revisado: 09-09-21
I wanted to love it. Instead I found stereotypes abound, poor character development, and a very predictable Americana theme set to what the privileged think international empathy looks like. White people good, brown people terrorists (but do we dare ask why?), Americans are heroes. The end.
*sigh* Wake me when writers venture beyond such tropes and jump scares. It's trite, disappointing and predictble. Kurds deserve better than this....and Americans deserve a longer look in the mirror.

Historia
On a chilly spring morning in Brooklyn, 19-year-old Linda Sarsour stared at her reflection, dressed in a hijab for the first time. She saw in the mirror the woman she was growing to be - a young Muslim American woman unapologetic in her faith and her activism, who would discover her innate sense of justice in the aftermath of 9/11. Now heralded for her award-winning leadership of the Women’s March on Washington, Sarsour offers a “moving memoir [that] is a testament to the power of love in action” (Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow).

A call to humanity
Revisado: 03-24-20
I have never had an author inspire me to use all the love, outrage, defiance and faith in me more than Linda Sarsour has here, and I know that it is in this resolve that we find the power to change the world. She can love you wholly while challenging you to grow, can make you feel so capable yet still humble, and all the while inspire you to be better in every way. Linda and the movements she leads will be on the right side of history, and we are all so blessed to be alive to witness them and able to join them. She is an American treasure. A true revolutionary. My hero.

Beautifully written. Painfully real. I hate this ending so much I could cry. I wanted so much more for Neni.

Historia
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

His voice is soothing but never boring. His descriptions are so vivid and poignant that you will be wiping tears before you even realize you're going to cry. He has such a gift for challenging the reader without alienating them. His talent and perspective are such a treasure. One of the greats, for sure.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.
