Illuminating
Revisado: 12-26-24
I have read all of Flannery's stories and novels, but often had trouble figuring out what the point of the story was. These lectures give me the tools to go back and reread and now see what Flannery is doing. O'Connor is an impressive author as it is, but after listening to these lectures I will appreciate her even more.

Walter Wangerin's profound fantasy concerns a time when the sun turned around the earth and the animals could speak, when Chauntecleer the Rooster ruled over a more or less peaceful kingdom. What the animals did not know was that they were the Keepers of Wyrm, monster of evil long imprisoned beneath the earth ... and Wyrm, sub terra, was breaking free.

Minority Report
Revisado: 08-29-24
I guess I'm in the minority, in that I did not love this book. Stylistically it just doesn't work for me . The Quasi-biblical phraseology combined with colloquialisms oftenn grates, and with a lot of the characters, I just want them to stop talking. I did not find most of the characters actually likeable. I would definitely not read this to children, as it can be very intense and gory, and the evil forces are strong. Nevertheless, the book is an interesting treatment of some biblical themes.

Nietzsche wrote that all philosophy is autobiographical, and in this vividly compelling, myth-shattering biography, Sue Prideaux brings listeners into the world of this brilliant, eccentric, and deeply troubled man, illuminating the events and people that shaped his life and work. I Am Dynamite! is the essential biography for anyone seeking to understand history's most misunderstood philosopher.

insightful book marred by a bad narrator
Revisado: 08-19-24
This book provides a lot of background that you won't get simply by reading Nietzsche's works. it's quite insightful, though I found myself occasionally disagreeing with the author's interpretations. The book, however, is marred by a narrator with a good voice who nevertheless has a tin ear for English, no real sense of what he's reading, and no knowledge of the German language. Considering that German phrases and titles appear regularly in this book, it's rather maddening if you do speak German to listen to his manglings.

Historia
Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Worthwhile
Revisado: 06-18-24
Insightful, dismaying, encouraging. As an Evangelical myself, this helped me think through the tragedy of what Evangelicalism has become and led me to some insights about how I can think about things in this contentious political year. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is that I think sometimes there's so much in this book that the thread of the story occasionally got a bit lost. But I will definitely be recommended this to others.

important Message
Revisado: 06-06-24
I've been going through the video series by the same name and decided to go ahead and listen to the book. The content is good, but the narrator is really bad. He has little sense for the material, and mispronounces Emmaus in at least two different ways, which leaves me thinking he is not of the faith and doesn't understand the content. I'm surprised a better narrator wasn't found. Not sure why Curtis, Russell, Nancy, and David couldn't have just read their own sections.

Historia
A Voyage to Arcturus is a classic science fiction novel by David Lindsay. If you're interested in science fiction but crave something with a little more intellectual heft than your typical space opera, give David Lindsay's A Voyage to Arcturus a try. Widely praised by critics as one of the most philosophically advanced science fiction novels, the book follows two intrepid spiritual seekers through a series of remarkable interstellar adventures.

Plodding text, plodding narrator who has little understanding of what actual conversation sounds like. This book is interesting only as an artifact of the 1920s.

Historia
A mere 18 years of age when his uncle, Julius Caesar, is murdered, Octavius Caesar prematurely inherits rule of the Roman Republic. Surrounded by men who are jockeying for power—Cicero, Brutus, Cassius, and Mark Antony—young Octavius must work against the powerful Roman political machinations to claim his destiny as first Roman emperor. Sprung from meticulous research and the pen of a true poet, Augustus tells the story of one man’s dream to liberate a corrupt Rome.

Tedious
Revisado: 11-19-23
Starts out okay, but after a couple hours becomes tedious. Occasionally rises above that but then sinks back into the tedium. I have nothing against the idea of an epistolary novel, but in this case, I was eager for "Augustus" to be over. Fortunately, he died before I did.

Historia
They are Microserfs - six code-crunching computer whizzes who spend upward of 16 hours a day "coding" and eating "flat" foods as they fearfully scan company e-mail to learn whether the great Bill is going to "flame" one of them. But now there's a chance to become innovators instead of cogs in the gargantuan Microsoft machine. The intrepid Microserfs are striking out on their own-living together in a shared digital flophouse as they desperately try to cultivate well-rounded lives and find love amid the dislocated, subhuman whir and buzz of their computer-driven world.

Decent Book, Off-putting Narrator
Revisado: 01-16-23
I like Coupland's quirky humor and occasional flashes of insight and profundity, but I don't consider this one of his best books. It's decent, and the last 30 minutes or so are powerful and touching.
But the whole thing is ruined by the narrator, who is so off-putting that I had to force myself to keep listening (after about 8 hours, I got used to him). The voice is wrong, the cadences are wrong, and unfortunately, he didn't bother to learn the correct pronunciation of the places he refers to in the Pacific Northwest and California. Whoever chose him for the role (I hope it wasn't Coupland!) ought to be looking for a different career.
