Historia
In Recollections of My Nonexistence, Rebecca Solnit describes her formation as a writer and as a feminist in 1980s San Francisco, in an atmosphere of gender violence on the street and throughout society and the exclusion of women from cultural arenas. She tells of being poor, hopeful, and adrift in the city that became her great teacher, and of the small apartment that, when she was 19, became the home in which she transformed herself. She explores the forces that liberated her as a person and as a writer.

Historia
Visceral and astonishing, Paul Tran's debut poetry collection All the Flowers Kneeling investigates intergenerational trauma, sexual violence, and U.S. imperialism in order to radically alter our understanding of freedom, power, and control. In poems of desire, gender, bodies, legacies, and imagined futures, Tran’s poems elucidate the complex and harrowing processes of reckoning and recovery, enhanced by innovative poetic forms that mirror the nonlinear emotional and psychological experiences of trauma survivors.

The best poetry book I've read/heard in a while! So moving. Also, the narrator is the poet, which makes this a very special book to listen to.

Historia
Our brains stay active for 10 minutes after our heart stops beating. For Leila, each minute brings with it a new memory: growing up with her father and his wives in a grand old house in a quiet Turkish town; watching the women gossip and wax their legs while the men went to mosque; sneaking cigarettes and Western magazines on her way home from school; running away to Istanbul to escape an unwelcome marriage; falling in love with a student who seeks shelter from a riot in the brothel where she works.

Historia
What is it like to be a refugee? It is a question few in the West give much thought to, and yet to be a refugee - or an immigrant - is to grapple with your place in the world, attempting to reconcile the life you have known with the unfamiliar. With this comes the weight of the expectations (and fears and resentment) of those born in the host country; foremost is the burden of gratitude: to be forever thankful for the space you have been allowed.

incredible and shocking story!
Revisado: 10-11-16
This book will grab you from the first 5 minutes. A shocking story beautifully written.
"These long-haired girls seemed to glide above all that was happening around them, tragic and separate. Like royalty in exile."
"I could drink until my problem seemed compact and pretty. Something I could admire."
"It surprised me that someone could just touch me at any moment, the gift of their hand given as thoughtlessly as a piece of gum."
".. money kept everyone slaves, where they buttoned their shirts up to the neck, strangling any love they had inside themselves."

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

you obviously must read Lolita at least once! the first 1/4 of the book is difficult to follow since the taboo subject matter is described so beautifully that you may find yourself uncomfortable at points. if you keep listening you'll realize why this novel is praised for its brilliance for decades. also, Jeremy Irons does an incredible job narrating it!
