Historia
There is no bigger public health story now than the collapse in youth mental health. The numbers are terrifying and dominate our headlines. There has been much debate over how we got here, and what to do next, and bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt is at the white-hot center of that discourse. Haidt has spent his career speaking wisdom and truth into the most difficult landscapes—communities polarized by politics and religion, campuses battling culture wars, and now the perfect storm contributing to a public health emergency for Gen Z.

Historia
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Inspiring
Revisado: 10-24-22
Not much too say other than a tremendously powerful story. I truly enjoyed the rollercoaster ride of exciting, to gripping, to despair, to gut-twisting, to painful, and finally to peace.
The author captures the story and the essence of Louis Zamperini as well as a host of other characters to bring this journey to life.

Historia
As the United States marks the 150th anniversary of our defining national drama, 1861 presents a gripping and original account of how the Civil War began. 1861 is an epic of courage and heroism beyond the battlefields. Early in that fateful year, a second American revolution unfolded, inspiring a new generation to reject their parents' faith in compromise and appeasement, to do the unthinkable in the name of an ideal.

Expanding historical context
Revisado: 10-10-22
I truly enjoyed most of this book. At the onset of the story the author describes it as a social awareness of the societal context leading up to the Civil War. It was fascinating to learn about the Civil War in this way. I recommend this book for history buffs and those who wish to gain a deeper perspective of social sentiment through different lenses.

Historia
At the end of the 1980s, when the Cold War ended, many, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, believed that democracy had triumphed politically once and for all. Yet nearly 30 years later, the direction of history no longer seems certain. A repressive and destructive force has begun to reemerge on the global stage - sweeping across Europe, parts of Asia, and the United States - that to Albright, looks very much like fascism.

Awesome History Lesson
Revisado: 07-24-22
At first I had trouble following where the author was going but once she got in to a historical but also methodical list of fascist rulers I was spellbound. I knew about a few but not all and was surprised at the details that I didn’t know. Albright outlines her thoughts clearly. An important read and reminder with hope at the end.

Historia
In an age riven by "fake news," "alternative facts," and disputes over the validity of everything from climate change to the size of inauguration crowds, the authors argue that social factors, not individual psychology, are what's essential to understanding the persistence of false belief and that we must know how those social forces work in order to fight misinformation effectively.

Helpful and insightful
Revisado: 04-08-22
Overall I liked this book. It’s themes were well laid out and easy to understand. I thought the examples were great and helped demonstrate the authors’ points. It was great all the way up to the last 5 minutes when, offering solutions, they proposed some radical ideas that, if enough time has been spent in details there, could have come across more credible.
However, I would recommend this book as it does get to the point of how and why misinformation starts and spreads and how we need to hold society accountable.

Truly enjoyed this thoughtful, interesting, and well researched story. I resonated with the injuries the author started with and was instantly entranced by the abilities of the characters in the book. Specifically loved the fact that I hadn’t heard of any of them before. Finally, the biology, anthropology, and supporting studies were absolutely fascinating.

Historia
Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic - a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building.

Emotional read
Revisado: 07-09-21
I had put off listening to this because I was afraid of how I would feel and react, although looking back, those emotions were childish. I found myself engrossed in the words and the deep transformation Anne goes through over her two years in hiding. Not only is this an incredible insight to how people hid from the Nazis but it is an equally incredible insight in to a young person’s inner most thoughts. I would argue Anne was not and is not alone in how she was feeling when it came to her own self and her development both in mind, body, and spirit. Selma Blair does an amazing job giving a voice to this important piece of writing.
