Historia
Humanity is on the brink of annihilation. Only one man can turn the tide. For centuries, we explored the stars and settled new worlds. But a mysterious alien threat emerged, launching devastating attacks and seizing entire star systems. Every fifty years they come, silent and relentless, before disappearing again into the dark. And as they close in on humanity’s home worlds, one more defeat could mean total extinction.

Good start to a new series
Revisado: 11-29-24
I generally like Marc's writing so I never really hesitate to get one of his books. This one does start of a bit slow and builds allot if back story in the beginning all the way up to the last third of the book - maaaaaaybe a tad too long for my taste hence the 4 stars. But I expect that will get allot of character development and backstory out of the way for the next few books so I am quite looking forward to reading them.
The narrator was new to me, I enjoyed his reading style, I think it fits well to the rype of story the series appears to build up to.

Historia
Lieutenants Lance Baker and Sofia Jimenez saved Earth in the fateful battle against the aliens who’d been intent on its destruction. But there’s a problem: One of the enemy carriers got away. Not only that, but it jumped to a star that’s out of reach of Terran jump technology, and it’s probably going for reinforcements. The final battle to save Earth resulted in the destruction of most of Terra’s defensive forces, and Lance and Sofia still have no idea what’s waiting for them among the stars.

solid stoey, good character development from book 1
Revisado: 04-24-24
I enjoy the story, but question the choice of the narrator. His narration voice is fine, his technical skills are good. However, his character voices sound more like caricatures rather than actual personas. To me it makes the story sound like a book for children rather than adults. The book is still overall enjoyable and worth it, but could have been better.

Historia
Minalan the Spellmonger has come a long way since he woke up to a goblin invasion almost a decade ago. Since then, he has built cities and mighty armies, invented new enchantments, and pioneered entirely new fields of magic. Now that the Witch Queen of Darkfaller has taken over one of the most powerful castles in the center of the kingdom, he has to marshal all his resources—political, military, and arcane—to try to drive her from the strategic and symbolically important stronghold.

Historia
Earth-2 is a world almost consumed by dangers, on the brink of civil war between the cloned “Tanks”, the “Natural Borns”, and the hybrid “Mules”. The only thing that has prevented actual fighting, a conflict that may destroy the young planet, is the existence of an even worse enemy, one that sees the three groupings as part of the same infection. The Regent and the deadly threat of the First Imperium’s robot warriors has provided sufficient fear and incentive to force the human groupings together, to hold off their own contest.

sorry to.say: weakest book of the series...
Revisado: 10-14-23
I've read all of Jay's books and have always enjoyed them. This one I could just not get myself to even finish.
if one could cut out the ever repeating (after the firat monolog there is never anything new to it) inner monologue of each *and *every *character including the robots, this story could shet 4 or maybe 5 hours in length. i really have to wonder where the editor was in all of this. I assume you have to hand over a certain number of words/pages worth of story but in this case making it shorter would have greatly improved the outcome.
I stopped with 5 hours remaining, it was just unbearable to me.
Sorry Jay, I am looking forward to upcoming books and series.

Another great book in the series
Revisado: 09-11-23
the longer a series goes on, the more likely it is a weak story might come along - not in this universe though. the story is well written, the characters get constant development and don't just stay the same in perpetuity. The story lines in this book also make overall sense in the larger development of the story's universe and you get a few new characters which is what I enjoy.
Performance but Steven Brand is - as usual - really, really great. a good part of why I enjoy the books so much is definitely also dues to Steven's performance.

Great background creating story
Revisado: 11-13-22
loved the story, the narrator is great, but I will just have to step on my soap box for a moment - if you have several different narrators performing stories in the same universe/series then the producers really, really have to get the pronunciation or names and places consistent across all books. It hits me like a hammer in the head every time I hear a different pronunciation....
just my pet peeve maybe, but it irks me enough to write this much in a review.
The story is still great the the narrator is the right choice for this story , and i don't regret getting the book and enjoyed listening to it.

never disappoints
Revisado: 10-10-22
the combo of Terry Mancour's story telling and John Lee's narration really never disappoints. I enjoy these .5 volume that Terry outs out. They are a great way of putting out background and peripheral story info that actually make the main bike more interesting without having to make them really long by having to add allot of "color" which I often find distracts from story.

The human powers have been pushed to the brink, battered, and almost destroyed. The virus they have invented and deployed, their sole possibility for victory, seems to be too little, too late. Its usage has only spurred the enemy to quicker action, to finish the war before they have to deal with its effects. But the humans do not know that the Highborn are faced on another front, by a race they know little about but have battled for two centuries.

Good ending to the series, if somewhat long-winded
Revisado: 09-16-22
i have read/listened to each of the books in the series and lived all of them. this is the first I feel i can't give a full 100%.
The author tends to give the characters long and in-depth inner monologues that explain allot of their thinking and - at times - that could get a bit long. in this book though, the characters repeat themselves over and over and over again. I feel that this book could easily loose 15 - 20% of unnecessary fluff and still be the same great story. knowing this ahead of time I still would have bought it, but I would had much less reason the say the words "Get to the frigging point, we've heard this already x times" so many times under my breath.
still happy to have listened to it though, great tie-in to other series which i totally did not see coming.

narration let a decent story down
Revisado: 07-30-22
i remember reading this book first sometime in the mid 80s and loving it. I actually read it a few times. i had not touched the book since then but always fondly remembered it and since I almost solely listen to books now got this one out of nostalgia.
Could.Not.Finish.It.
Ggranted the story aged a bit and the technology discussed in it - that for it's time was well thought through - does not quite stand up to the reality of history. That would have been ok, there are allot of.boka you could nitpick on like that.
But the narration is just God awful. what a horrible choice of narrators and what a terrible job they did. I blame whoever was the producer, i think that the voices themselves were OK, it was how they were used.
what a shame, i was looking forward to this.
