Historia
Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly...something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back—mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

This might be my all-time favorite King book!
Revisado: 05-26-24
Such a fantastic group of stories--I especially loved the one honoring Flannery O'Connor. "On Slide Inn Road" would be absolutely perfect for a comparative lit class. "Rattlesnakes" and "The Answer Man" are also strong--great characters, solid storytelling, emotional, immersive, and gripping. "Two Talented Bastids" was fun, had some truly quotable lines, and felt like a continuation of King's discussion of writing/work/talent in his nonfiction ON WRITING. Highly, highly recommend this book--from the narration, to the writing, it's 5-star brilliance all the way.

Five years ago, Coburn went to sleep - wasn't exactly planned - and he's just woken up to find most everybody in the world dead. And not cool, interesting dead like him; oh, no. Coburn looks basically human, and these guys...really don't. He likes blood, and they like flesh. He's smart; them, not so much. But they outnumber him by about a million to one, and their clotted blood cannot sustain him.

Great book - Terrible narration
Revisado: 03-15-24
The book itself is a 4 to a 5. Highly recommend.
The narrator for the audiobook is a zero. It was so flat and emotionless that it felt like it was voiced by AI. His mispronunciations were embarrassing ('bow' and 'minute' jumped out at me as two of the most ridiculous). I was sorry I spent the credit.
Highly recommend the print version on this one!

High praise for City of Ghosts
Revisado: 12-02-23
V. E. Schwab does a wonderful job with these characters. They're real, and relatable--they practically jump off the page. The narrator is fantastic, nicely paced, and her vouce is well-suited to the characters. I highly recommend this book to any fans of Holly Black or Alix Harrow.
They only negative was the frequent Harry Potter references (the main character and a helper character are fans). That's just personal preference on my part as I don't/won't support anything J. K. Rowling has any part of, due to her extremist anti-trans policy.
The HP references weren't enough to make me give this story fewer stars. It was simply character-building on Schwab's part and she shouldn't be penalized for another writer's transphobic behavior.
5 stars. Highly recommend.

In these 10 lectures, you will better understand where many of our most indelible images of witchcraft come from and how the religious pursuit of witches across Europe and into the Americas in the early modern period spread fear and violence like a contagion, for generations.

Not for me
Revisado: 09-13-23
I gave it a couple hours, but this speaker just isn't for me. DNF. She comes across as being strongly influenced by her own (monotheistic, Abrahamic) beliefs and often speaks of witchcraft in an almost insulting, belittling manner. Her lecture tone isn't enjoyable. She adds a lot of unnecessary filler words.
