No Ordinary Memoir

I already knew that NYPD Blue was different. My wife and I agreed with every binge watching on DVD through the years that this was no ordinary Cop show. Anybody watching the death of Bobby Simone episodes as well as the David Caruso and Dennis Franz stories (and almost everything and everybody else apart from gratuitous sex scenes) could see this. We knew that the writers, producers and directors had accomplished something extraordinary. And we knew that three men, David Milch, Steven Bocho and David Mills had, through the infrastructure of a Cop Show, plumbed the depths of almost every aspect of the human spirit, of good, evil, and ambiguity in the complexity of being human beings. But while I had already known all of this about NYPD Blue I never expected David Milch's memoir to reflect all of this in his own personal life and story. This book (and its amazingly narrated audible version) is no ordinary story. It is a telling that shows how real literature (for that's what this is) is rooted in the deepest parts of the human spirit with all of its triumphs, personal failings and hopes of redemption. Five-plus stars.

I have long been interested in Medieval history but it was clear from the start that the author was cherry picking the sources for voyeuristic nuggets to make Medieval marriage look like a house of titillating desire suffocated by priestly hypocrisy and cruelty based on bad science. That the science was bad is doubtless, just as much of it is today but in the direction of dangerous decadence (60+ millions of dead from AIDS alone). Implicitly assuming the new myths of Sade, Freud, Margaret Mead and Michel Foucault. The author successfully caricatures the Medieval past without caring to acknowledge much of its strengths.

Alan Dershowitz has on the whole presented a convincing case that Israel has often been maliciously caricatured by its enemies.

This important book needs a new narration

The substance of the subject matter and brilliance of the author make this a singularly important book, but the ridiculous attempts at imitating accents and voices completely ruins it. Buy the book. Forget this Audible version until it is redone in serious fashion.

Good story effectively performed in the audio-literary tradition of the late great Joe Frank.

Agree with him always or not, Gore Vidal was perhaps the greatest analyst of the American experiment ever. Always witty, smug and insightful, he made reading 'events' a joy and a true education, unlike today when political discourse is a bloodsport and reads like partisan politburo's constructing Gulags for the opposition, when biting satire would do the job nicely. But satire requires intelligence, Gulags are the work of thugs. I read substantial portions of this book decades (I think) ago. But it is just as much an intellectual feast hearing it today on Audible. Especially with such a superb and gifted narrator who often makes me forget that I am not exactly listening to Vidal himself.

Poor Joe Often hysterical

Poor Joe is often hysterical again, endless screaming demagoguery. He's got to be bipolar, right?" But in curious way I find the "show" entertaining.
