I thought the book both well researched and well read with a great style, ie moving from interview to interview sharing the author’s journey of discovery.

While the reading is a bit dramatic that distracted from thinking (but not overly so), this work was well worth hearing. One has to remember that it is popular and the author does not claim theological credentials, but her grasp of church history is voluminous and her coverage of relevant biblical texts seemed complete. I was sympathetic before reading the book, but the book awoke in me a desire to dialogue. Too bad books cannot talk back. And the Foucauldian assertion of unstated motives makes one wonder if dialogue is invited. Still it was well worth the listen and the continued reflection. I recommend it as an introduction to a major issue that will or should open eyes.

Her ability to appreciate the good in famous people and the danger when it warps into celebrity culture is remarkable and her advice in pointing to solutions is the wisdom of the ages. Well written and well read.

It is unusual to hear an author read his own book, and that was interesting, but the quality of the text was mixed. He sometimes was discussing documented statements and actions, sometimes even with context, but he would mix that with a lot of innuendo from what others implied or did or the like. Eventually I realized that it was not good for my soul, according to St Thomas More. I wish the author knew about Jesuit education and had looked at Pope Francis’ statements and quips in their full context. It would also help if he realized that he repeatedly passes Our Lady of Silence in his apartment. There are problems, and in some areas they could be called crisis. Some of the calls for care were fine. But the mixture with rumors, “someone said that he said,” interpreting silence, and made one want to doubt the things that were actually documented, as well as go to confession for having listened to many sections of the text.
