Historia
Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Good contemporary romance and not a romcom.
Revisado: 01-16-25
Emily Henry does great snappy, smart dialogue along with full-on characters and interesting twists to romance tropes (at least in this book). So, I like reading her work. This is one I liked reading however uncomfortable it made me at times. Uncomfortable because it is about an all-out emotional female romance writer who butt heads with a fairly pulled-in-closed-in male extremely literate anything but romance writer. All of her emotions felt overwhelming (of course they were meant to because of her life). But, just gah! And he seemed hard and maybe inflexible. Wow it was going to be hurt city and I kept cringing about it as the book progressed. Well, having me so wound up in the story sure is a sign of a really good writer. You might want to read this because it is really good even with all the feelings.
Not to leave out: Julia Whelan - great narrator always.

Historia
Ruth Winters is retired, widowed, and resigned to spending the rest of her life alone in her suburban home. She likes her routine and uses it to avoid having to spend time with other people. She probably wouldn’t call herself fulfilled, but it’s too late now to go chasing happiness. Then three things happen at once: a beloved niece makes a big announcement, an old flame reaches out, and her estranged sister receives life-changing news.

Surprisingly engrossing
Revisado: 01-14-25
What a fascinating story about this 60+ year-old, widowed woman withdrawn pretty much since childhood with shyness and lack of her own worth. As the story progresses she begins to have mirrored back to her the respect of others so surprising to her. I immersed myself in her encounters and reflections. Ruth is intelligent, sharp and bluntly honest with herself as well as others so watching her open herself to neighbors, people from her time in high school and particularly her estranged sister made for an engrossing and teaching experience for Ruth and me, the reader.
I struggled at times with Joyce Bean's narration as it often felt sort of flat and rote often with little pause to signify a chapter change. However, this may have been intended as Ruth at first seemed a bit flat and stuck in schedules and rules gradually allowing herself to open to a new and maybe scary life.

Historia
As a child, Devlin Ware thought his family stood for all that was right and good in the world. They were kind, gracious, and shared the beauty of Ravenwood, their grand country estate, by hosting lavish parties for the entire countryside. But at 22, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor. So be it. He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn't look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home.

Lovely. Big Sigh.
Revisado: 01-02-25
Whenever I want to read something far away from now with a few challenges for the characters, wisdom from experience gained, and love of family and friends, I usually choose Mary Balogh's gentle prose and listening to Rosalyn Landor narrating. Ms. Balogh leaves me feeling quietly serene and thinking, "Okay, I can continue with my life challenges now." Thanks, Ms. Balogh, once again. Smile.

Okay, but . . .
Revisado: 12-30-24
Pretty self-explanatory from the summary - messy relationship issues. Good writing, some snarky, sarcastic dialogue and "one night together." Did not like the ending.
Teddy Hamilton and Laurie West did a fine job narrating.

Lily learns she was right. Tom Weng - a powerful sorcerer allied with the Old One who keeps trying to take over the world - is still alive. But that's not the worst. Weng is a dragon spawn, the product of a botched hatching given a human form in an attempt to keep him from going mad. A failed attempt.

If the writing wasn't so good I would have rated this a 1 star as Ms. Wilks left us with - what? Just stopped. Worse than a cliffhanger. Lots of action, war is starting and the gang is back in the underworld. A really bad place to be and all the action and build-up to retrieve what was taken from above ground simply stopped and the book ended. Glad I have been binge listening to this with GraphicAudio and already have book #14 to start tomorrow. GraphicAudio makes this an amazing listen.

Historia
After questing through the sidhe realms with her ex-hellhound lover, Nathan, Kai Tallman Michalski has finally returned home. But she knows Nathan will eventually be called back to serve his queen - and Kai will have to decide whether to enter her majesty’s service as well. Sure, the job comes with great bennies, but there’s one big downside: She would have to swear absolute fealty to the Queen of Winter.

Still a good, solid four-star read with all the action and dialogue and magic information (head spin here - if it is made up it is really well done). However, as I am reading this a few years after the last book was written in the series (#14, I believe), just finishing #10 and reading the next four books' summaries I am not inclined to finish the series. Good reading, entertaining and action-packed with characters I like.

Deeper and deeper I dive into this creative urban fantasy world of lupi and elves and brownies and so many other combinations of characters I refuse to memorize. Fascination with the action, the personalities, relationships, good vs evil and all the morality in between holds my attention from beginning to ending. Lily and Rule continue to evolve and mature as they hold to their values to fight evil without losing themselves or the clans or the world to evil beings. Amazingly complex and intricate world building and worth every minute of my reading time.
Reading this in GraphicAudio - sooo good

Historia
Death Magic opens with Special Agent Lily Yu in Washington, DC, with her fiancé - lupi Prince Rule Turner - to testify before a Senate subcommittee about her role in the magical collapse of a mountain last month. She is not there to tell them about the strange legacy she carries from that event - or about the arcane bond between her and Rule - or what her boss in Unit Twelve of the FBI’s Magical Crimes Division is really up to. She sure won’t tell them that the lupi are at war with an Old One who wants to remake humanity in her own image.

Revisado: 12-17-24
Whew! More characters, more drama, more action, more hate and death magic from the Humans First crowd full of prejudice and all things evil slammed into Lily and Rule and Cullen and Rueben and lots of others making strides to love peacefully among humans. I continue to read this series because the writing is good and the twists and surprises just keep on coming. Pretty intense overall and I particularly enjoy the developing and maturing relationship between Lily and Rule which does not take over the story simply enriching it a bit.

Revisado: 12-16-24
Wow!! This was one challenge after another for our gang fighting the bad guys. Add in lots of new information about magic and the lupi and even elves - another wow! No details and no spoilers here. Characters keep developing, new ones come on board (love Arjennie) and many recurring characters keep helping out (or not). The plots continue to evolve into more complexity just as the characters do. Of course, Rule & Lily and Cullen & Cynna are in all the above with a big addition of Benedict & Arjennie. This Lupi world is getting bigger. Ms. Wilks has a rip-roaring couple of action scenes (actually quite a bit of action) and for some action scenes I figuratively had to wipe the sweat off my brow. More books to read and I am off to find book 8, "Death Magic." Big smile. Also, GraphicAudio is a great way to listen to this series.
