Historia
Published in chronological order, with extensive story and bibliographic notes, this series not only provides access to stories that have been out of print for years, but gives them a historical and social context. Series editors Scott Conners and Ronald S. Hilger excavated the still-existing manuscripts, letters and various published versions of the stories, creating a definitive "preferred text" for Smith's entire body of work. This second volume of the series brings together 20 of his fantasy stories.

a great listen
Revisado: 08-29-24
I have long enjoyed the vivid stories of Clark Ashton Smith, and having them read aloud is a real treat. I find that his huge (and entertaining) vocabulary and the way he uses it, adds to the strangeness and otherworldliness of his stories. The narration was all very good and well suited to this early 20th century fantasy/ horror collection.

Bad narration, couldn't finish.
Revisado: 02-05-23
I can't rate the story, because I didn't hear it all. I do a lot of needlework myself, but found the overemphasis on the details of various types and minutiae to be a bit precious. The narrator sounds like she's reading to a kindergarten class in a very rote way; just reading, not conveying the story. I found myself drifting frequently and missing entire sections. She reads quite clearly, at least. This might be quite different in actual book form and I may try it that way.

Historia
In this world of bribes, vendettas, and swindling, in which heiresses are gambled and won, Trollope's characters embody all the vices: Lady Carbury is 'false from head to foot'; her son Felix has 'the instincts of a horse, not approaching the higher sympathies of a dog'; and Melmotte - the colossal figure who dominates the book - is a 'horrid, big, rich scoundrel...a bloated swindler...a vile city ruffian'. But as vile as he is, he is considered one of Trollope's greatest creations.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

enjoyable listen
Revisado: 04-10-22
I found this book to be a good way to while away a rainy couple of days. I thought the narrator did a really good job with both the male and female voices. The story came across well, and even though aspects of the mystery became apparent early on, the unfolding of the solution was the real thrust. Some people have said that the main character was too forward for her time, but I disagree. Women who serve in wartime as nurses see a lot and no doubt learn to take command of situations. And this comes on the heels of the suffragette movement - they were certainly no shrinking violets. I liked the main character and will be happy to read another Bess Crawford mystery.

These stories are enjoyable, but some of the narration leaves a lot to be desired. The first 4 stories I found to be unlistenable. However, 5 and 6, both read by Cameron Stewart, are quite good, and so I listened to the rest - they do get better as they go on.

Excellent listen
Revisado: 11-28-21
Stephen Fry's narration and Arthur Conan Doyle's writing are the perfect combination. Mr. Fry is so good at varying his accents and tones; he brings the characters to life. His incredible diction suits the author's style and is pure pleasure to listen to. We all know that the stories are classics; related and riffed on in numberless ways in both film and literature. However, there is no substitute for the originals. Elegant, clever, and engaging, read by the equally elegant, clever, and engaging Stephen Fry.
