Historia
In the fourteenth century, opportunities for women are limited to the home. But spirited young Madlen finds her calling as assistant to the city's trusted midwife, Clara. Working alongside Clara, Madlen develops a surprisingly soothing technique and quickly becomes a talented healer. After Clara's tragic death, Madlen alone rushes to assist the birth of a local nobleman's child. But rather than the joy of birth, Madlen walks into an accusation of murder and witchcraft because of her extraordinary gifts. Forced to flee her own town, she establishes a new identity in the home of her aunt.

I truly enjoyed most of this book. Good narration and story development. Toward the end it was difficult to keep track of who was speaking, but otherwise this was a nice, uplifting story.

Story loses a point due to one action toward the end

This was interesting from a historical perspective and I thought Saskia did a nice job on narration. The young 1940s heroine feels a bit whiny at times but I did truly enjoy Eve.

Historia
The imprisonment and execution of Queen Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife, in 1536 was unprecedented in English history and never before has there been a book devoted entirely to her fall. But here Alison Weir has reassessed the evidence and created a richly researched and detailed portrait of the last days of one of the most influential and important figures in English history.

Nicely focused on Anne Boleyn
Revisado: 08-08-24
The story for the most part was interesting and included details typically not included in books that focus on all six wives. The narrator wasn’t bad, but, kept using a French accent for the Spanish ambassador. Which seemed a bit odd.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

So happy Jennifer Ikeda is back as the narrator
Revisado: 07-23-24
I so wanted to like this more than I did. I absolutely loved the All Souls Trilogy. This just doesn’t hold a candle. There are some gaps in the story, puzzling gaps. There are other things that just seem out of character for Diana. And Matthew disappears in the background. But Jennifer helps it to at least be digestible as a book.

When the world is brought to a standstill in the early days of a pandemic, Etta Wilmont finds herself suddenly stranded in Kansas City. Desperate to secure a roof over her head, Etta crosses paths with Henry Logan, a lonely older man in need of a caretaker. His invitation for Etta to stay with him seems to be the solution to both their problems—and maybe the spontaneous adventure Etta’s life has been missing. Historia
If you were one of King Henry VIII's six wives, who would you be? Would you be Anne Boleyn, who literally lost her head? Would you be the subject of rumor and scandal like Catherine Howard? Or would you get away and survive like Anna of Cleves? Meet them and Henry's other queens - each bound for divorce or death - in this epic and thrilling novel that reads like fantasy but really happened.

I loved it
- De Wahaasamaker en 05-20-18
I liked the idea of this
Revisado: 07-05-24
The execution however, was not quite what I hoped for. The various stories of the queen's are not told with historical accuracy. Perhaps that was the purpose of the book (??) If so, then okay, they did indeed make changes, but there were things they changed that just left me scratching my head. Why on earth make those particular changes? They did not add to the story or provide clarity / insights / understanding of these historical women. Neither did the pieces specifically written in Henry's point of view.
If you are looking for a completely different telling of these pieces of history, then this book is for you. Enjoy! If you are looking for historical accuracy you may wish to pass this one by.

Historia
Jodi Grant had plans—a job interview that held promise and a date with a real woman who didn't only exist in her mind. What she had not planned on was a trip . . . at gunpoint when her father dropped a bombshell in her lap . . . at his own funeral. Dr. Blair Whittington went to Peru in search of ancient artifacts. What she discovered was the illegal antiquities trade in which she had unwittingly become embroiled. Betrayed by Nicolas Grant, Blair must rely on his estranged daughter, the key to her freedom.

Somewhat disappointing
Revisado: 05-08-24
Some of the story was very engaging. But other parts were just dull. Although the narrator has a lovely husky, smoky voice, she didn’t do enough variations in the way she did the characters to be able to tell who was speaking at any given time. Sometimes she just lost me all together. There was a big change in what was going on and I missed it because her voice, although pleasant was somnambulant. I wanted to like this more than I did.

Historia
Did you know that there are more penises than women in the Bayeux Tapestry? That the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 was started and propelled by women who were protesting a tax on women? Or that Charles Darwin believed not just that women were naturally inferior to men, but that they’d evolve to become ever more inferior? These are just a few of the startling findings you will learn from listening to Philippa Gregory’s Normal Women. In this ambitious book, she tells the story of England over 900 years, for the very first time placing women—some fifty per cent of the population—center stage.

Very interesting - up until the last quarter
Revisado: 04-06-24
This author used to be an automatic buy for me for many years. So when I saw the title pop-up I immediately went to take a look at it. The premise was intriguing and the sample was good. So I purchased the book. I really enjoyed about three quarters of the book. Well written. All kinds of great historical detail that I had never encountered before. But in the last quarter of the book we veered off into some disturbing contemporary political correctness. I would have greatly appreciated understanding prior to purchase what the focus of the last portion of the book would be.
Failing that, I just suffered through the end wincing through many of the concepts espoused. This book managed to be interesting and very disappointing at the same time.
