Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Repetitive and too long
Revisado: 03-19-25
I made it within 7 hours of the end. The pattern of jumping ahead began feeling repetitive. The book was too long to tell the story it was The writing was very good but not good enough for me to finish.

Second Book Blues
Revisado: 09-10-24
I made it 38 minutes and had to stop. Many of the characters were 2-dimensionally evil and the accents were overkill. As is often the case, the first book was good and second book feels rushed. I blame the remnants of the publishing industry.

Historia
On a hilltop in Umbria sits Valetto. Once a thriving village—and a hub of resistance and refuge during World War II—centuries of earthquakes, landslides, and the lure of a better life have left it neglected. Only ten residents remain, including the widows Serafino—three eccentric sisters and their steely centenarian mother—who live quietly in their medieval villa. Then their nephew and grandson, Hugh, a historian, returns. But someone else has arrived before him, laying claim to the cottage where Hugh spent his childhood summers.

Historia
After a traumatic incident, Aster's blood work comes back with some unusual readings. Unsurprising, as she’s the last of an alien race called the Kibsu, though she doesn’t know it. She becomes the focus of a hunt, with her mortal enemies, the Trackers, on one side, and the American government on the other. But help has come from a most unexpected quarter. Whoever finds her first, it won’t be good news for Aster. Or for the world!

Great Story, Weird Voice
Revisado: 06-27-24
I really enjoyed the story. It has a very good balance between providing information and letting you figure it out for yourself. I don't really understand the different races and what they are trying to do but I feel it and it is satisfying to read.
I agree with other reviewers that Astor's voice did not work. I winced at every "ain't" and was very distracted at attempts to give her a white trash accent. I don't think it adds anything to the book.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Unreadable
Revisado: 11-22-23
This book is a good reminder that winners of the big awards are more than often unreadable. Edoardo Ballerini's amazing voice got me through half of what proved to be a series of bios and obits of hateful robber barons.

Historia
It is September 1919: Twenty-one-year-old Tristan Sadler takes a train from London to Norwich to deliver a package of letters to the sister of Will Bancroft, the man he fought alongside during the Great War. But the letters are not the real reason for Tristan's visit. He can no longer keep a secret and has finally found the courage to unburden himself of it. As Tristan recounts the horrific details of what to him became a senseless war, he also speaks of his friendship with Will - from their first meeting on the training grounds at Aldershot to their farewell in the trenches of northern France.

Lovely Language and Attempts to Surprise
Revisado: 09-07-23
John Boyne is a master of the language and a joy to read. Unfortunately, in The Absolutist, he decided to repeatedly withhold from the reader. Even more unfortunately, these attempts to surprise fail and each one is predictable. I spent far too much time waiting for a trap to be sprung. The ending, though not predictable, was too melodramatic for my taste. I give 4 stars for the language and 2 for the story.

I didn't realize this was a kind of children's book. You wouldn't think so since it includes genocide of by humans and animals but the narrative style is simple and targets kids. I love Philip Kerr but couldn't get through this one.

Enjoyable stories, heavy on message
Revisado: 09-09-22
I enjoyed this well written book with good characters and enjoyable story lines. Despite being very heavy on message the stories carried me to their slightly confusing endings. The author was an excellent narrator.

Great Stories, Small Annoyances
Revisado: 07-20-22
I really like the stories behind the cases. The are original and clever. The regular characters are likeable and interesting. The narrator is very good and a perfect fit for the character. My general pet peeve is that everyone who testifies uses the same two-word style of answering: "I am, He did, I was, She has. etc." More variety in speech patters would be less annoying and more realistic. The word cement is used incorrectly several times by many clients in this book. Cement is a component of concrete, the correct word.
