Historia
Winner of Oprah's first "Chutzpah Award" for boldness, Irshad Manji is among the world's most visible - and vocal - Muslim reformers. In this audio book, narrated by her, Irshad explains the disturbing attitudes with which too many of her fellow Muslims practice Islam today: Arab cultural tribalism posing as pure faith. An uncritical approach to the Quran as the final and therefore superior word of God. And a rejection of universal human rights as if they are incompatible with the Divine.

You can’t fix a broken dream
Revisado: 11-19-18
Religion is a great hobby but please don’t take it too seriously. The book read like a good undergraduate paper and the author’s performance felt like a 14-year-old. After about an hour I was cringing every time another gotcha fridge came out. She just couldn’t stop smiling at her own jokes. I imagine it plays well to the university crowd.

Historia
Over 5,000 years, India has been home to a rich tapestry of peoples and cultures. Two of the world's great religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - have their origins in South Asia, and the lands east of the Indus River have long been a central hub for trade, migration, and cultural exchange. Today the subcontinent contains 20 percent of the world's population and is a thriving center for global business, making this region one of most significant economic powerhouses in the world.

Always love these series. Informative and entertaining

Loved it. Great info yet not dry and not a centralized viewpoint. Not too wet not too dry and never preachy or apologetic.

Historia
Why is America living in an age of profound economic inequality? Why, despite the desperate need to address climate change, have even modest environmental efforts been defeated again and again? Why have protections for employees been decimated? Why do hedge-fund billionaires pay a far lower tax rate than middle-class workers? The conventional answer is that a popular uprising against "big government" led to the rise of a broad-based conservative movement.

I have to say at first I was rooting for these guys, but eventually you lose faith with the Ayn Rand crowd. So many bad memories since 2008, and they're still going. Amazing when you consider they're richer now than ever.
Time to start putting heads on pikes.

Historia
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

The other half told in a one-sided manner
Revisado: 05-10-17
I enjoyed the book, but disagree with several conclusions made by the author. The fact cotton production in the rest of the world picked up during and after the American civil war disproves the notion slavery was needed (he goes as far to claim it was the cause) for the industrial revolution. It's also ridiculous to credit my great grandfather's job manufacturing thread bobbins slave-grown cotton. Slavery and the suppression of agricultural wages made a lot of rich people richer, but also made life harder for a lot of poor "white trash", a fact glossed over in the author's march to indignation. The book is 30% information and 70% horror stories about slavery sprinkled with convenient anecdotes.
I was looking for a serious economic investigation, not six degrees from Kevin Bacon, who I'm pretty sure never owned slaves. Worth the read, just disagreed with a lot of the conclusions.

Not a great book but a great read
Revisado: 04-07-17
I really enjoyed this book. Some of it a bit contrived and a little too long. The love scenes are syrupy, the violence somewhere between Hemingway and Sherlock Holmes. But it passes the test in a big way.
