Historia
The Siege of Excelsis is over at last, and the survivors count the costs amidst the rubble of their city. Even for Galen and Doralia ven Denst, two of the most feared witch hunters in the Order of Azyr, the horrors they have witnessed are not so easily dismissed. Struggling with the traumas inflicted by the siege, Doralia's concerns only grow when her father disappears into the wilds of Ghur. As she sets off on his trail, Doralia begins to suspect that Galen is hunting down a dark secret from their past - one that might hold the key to a new threat rising to engulf Excelsis.

utterly stupid ending
Revisado: 12-31-22
it's tricky sometimes to make these sorts of stories work in a greater narrative universe, but a good start is to not make an OP Mary Sue villain who is literally a better necromancer than Nagash, and the protagonists such poor tacticians they destroy a major narrative city through not informing the defenders of an ensuing invasion and decide go just Scooby-Doo it themselves.
...unless the author was supposed to be writing Broken Realms Briomedes.
the writing style was also super repetitive, and predictable. if you took a sip of beer every time "slime," "vomit," "dead" or "blood" was said, you'd still die of alcohol poisoning.
the first parts were not great, but the final act(s) are si wretchedly stupid I want my time back.

Historia
Allister Caine has always been an enigma and an outsider among the warcasters of Cygnar, but few are privy to his true motivations or his complicated past.… Born into poverty, Allister Caine did what he must to survive, and the choices he made have followed him like a vengeful specter throughout his life. Now, just months after the Lion’s Coup and his full commission as a warcaster, he has been secretly assigned by Scout General Rebald to investigate plots against King Leto in lands just north of the Bloodsmeath Marsh.

Sadly not one of the good ones
Revisado: 11-28-21
This story makes the character of Alister Caine worse than just reading his book profiles and the snippets from game books. It gets details flatout wrong on lore (Caine is referred to as "now a warcaster, promoted to lieutenant and leading some blabla", when a significant trait of his character is that he is one of the very few Cygnaran warcasters to have his rank of captain revoked; tremendous leniency is afforded tye rare warcasters, and Caine is a character forced to murder and assasinate people (enemy and "ally") often enough that he earns a spot on that dishonor roll, in spite of his qualified immunity as a warcaster. He is an anomaly, a trouble-maker, and a disgraced character, fallen from grace.
That's one of the most fundamental character details and the author got it wrong.
He was also trained under series anti-villain Magnus (foreshadowing his clouded outlook and history), but the author apprentices him under someone else for some reason. While skipping the entire process.
More damningly, the story is just boring and mediocre to hear. New people may not know that info or care, but there isn't much to recommend to a setting neophyte. Caine is portrayed as largely a dope who is easily manipulated by anybody willing to mention his father, which throws Caine off enough emotionally to become clay in their hands.
This is a character who lives a double-life as a duelist-provocateur/gunslinger assassin/wizard/troop commander/vagabond, fighting interesting foes in interesting warzones, and he somehow ends up an easily manipulated slack-jawed bland guy.
Additionally, there are a lot of arbitrary time skips and an attempt to start us off with an "in medias res" assassination of some random dude, making the whole thing kind of leading up to a pointless "and then Caine shot the guy".
I wish I had nicer stuff to say here. There are fortunately much better books in this series to read. Please read Blood of Kings instead. it didn't set out to be about Caine, but it's still a better Caine book than this one is.

Sam and the Devil Dogs may be relaxing in Tarna, but it’s not by choice - they’d rather be employed than resting up. Really fun story, great performances
Revisado: 05-06-21
I really liked this one. IK Ghostbusters/supernatural horror. it requires perhaps a little investment in the setting to appreciate, since many concepts and backgrounds are assumed familiar, and it is essentially a prelude to the release of the Grymkin faction in the game.
It is also a story that stands enjoyable enough through likable characters and tense atmosphere. It brought the events to life in a way that made some arguably questionable events in the larger story feel more grounded and grave.

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre: Masks of Nyarlathotep is an epic tale of globe-trotting adventure inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, presented as a 1930s-style radio drama. Dark Adventure Radio Theatre presents the tale with an absurdly large cast of professional actors, exciting sound effects and thrilling original music by Troy Sterling Nies. Now, in partnership with Chaosium, we've adapted their most famed and beloved game supplement of all time - Masks of Nyarlathotep - into a fully dramatized super episode of Dark Adventure Radio Theatre.

Really enjoyable!
Revisado: 10-29-20
Two of these stories were actually one larger story, but a great introduction to the world setting. The other two were short genre-fiction, mystery and war-fantasy respectively. One was grounded and showed us the daily life, and the other was a bit more over-the-top and gave us an idea of how fantastic the setting can be; Tanyel Two-shot seems a lot more powerful than the other (official) protagonists, and battles a 5000-strong army, magical mutants and deadly sorcerors with wits, guerrilla tactics, and copious amounts of gunpowder - which for a Powder Mage is both spell medium and basically arcane cocaine. Alongside him is his irregulars and a band of wild knights in enchanted armor, and a bunch of last-minute militia. Classical high-fantasy tropes, but maintains realism amd plenty of character despite that.
Worth a read for the setting alone, but i bet the chatacters will grow on you as well! Pretty close to Iron Kingdoms thematically, if warjacks were never invented.

Excellent Tzeentch-y fun
Revisado: 10-15-20
This book probably will not mean a ton to the average reader, but for fans of the Thousand Sons it was a delight.
My only real complaint was the silly voices used for the most afflicted if Chaos characters - but even then the delivery of the performer was quite good. The "how" was skillful; the "what" was a bit of a "why?!" 2 stars for direction, + 2 stars for performance skill.
