Book 2 in what will hopefully be the Dispatcher series
Revisado: 10-25-20
I can’t believe I found a better book than “The Dispatcher”, but this second of what I hope will be a series, was even better. I highly recommend both to both fans of John Scalzi and mystery lovers. Murder by Other Means was a treat of a read.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Don’t miss this!
Revisado: 10-10-20
I took a chance on both the narrator and author because I wasn’t familiar with either. I really enjoyed both. So much so, that I’m going to listen to The Dispatcher again and then to Book 2 in the series, Murder by Other Means.
This was very reminiscent of the Ray Bradbury short stories I used to read and enjoy in the Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazines 40 years ago. Quality writing and short stories at their best.
Thanks so much Mr. Scalzi!

A man dies with his hand on a radio dial. A distinguished aristocrat finds murder at the opening night of a play. A cryptogram produces death in an English churchyard. Death on the Air and Other Stories serves as the perfect introduction to Ngaio Marsh and her creation, Inspector Roderick Alleyn, or as a nostalgic journey for her many fans.

Wanda McMaddon AKA Nadia May
Revisado: 09-11-20
Before beginning this poor review, let me emphasize the fact that I love the work of both Miss Marsh and Miss May. I bought all of Ngaio Marsh’s books which were available through Audible at the time if narrated by Nadia May because I loved her performance so much, and I love most of the books by Miss Marsh. This book and the narration I did not love and do not recommend.
I found Miss May’s reading much too breathy, and I would find myself struggling to breathe for her before she smoothed out. Stories ran together because there wasn’t enough of a break between each for the listener to process the fact the story had ended. The experience of listening to this collection was not unlike what I used to experience reading my Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock magazines years ago. A couple of **really** good stories, a couple of bad ones, but mostly entertaining and forgotten when the next magazines were delivered.
Given I have enjoyed the full length Ngaio Marsh Audible books narrated by Nadia May, I don’t think it’s fair to place all the blame of not enjoying this one on the narration.
I didn’t buy or use a credit for this recording, I’m happy to say. I “borrowed” it through the new Audible Plus program. A fan of Inspector Roderick Alleyn will enjoy the first story in this collection in which he and his wife make an appearance, but features Sir Michael Lamprey. Sadly, none of his charming children make an appearance.

Historia
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

Flavia’s story is a gem. Long before I finished this Audible book, I bought more in the series because I enjoyed the narration so much. The siblings relationship is what I enjoyed the most. They provided a number of laugh-out-loud-moments. Highly recommended for hours of entertainment.

Historia
An astonishing tip from a grateful ex-convict seems implausible - but Inspector Ian Rutledge is intrigued and brings it to his superior at Scotland Yard. Alan Barrington, who has evaded capture for 10 years, is the suspect in an appalling murder during Black Ascot, the famous 1910 royal horse race honoring the late King Edward VII. His disappearance began a manhunt that consumed Britain for a decade. Now, it appears that Barrington has returned to England, giving the Yard a last chance to retrieve its reputation and see justice done.

Excellent addition to the series
Revisado: 02-28-20
As usual, Simon Prebble’s narration is stellar. The storyline is one of the best in the series and has a very strong ending. I listened way into the night and only stopped because I was nodding off and missing passages. I will listen to The Black Ascot again and highly recommend it to all fans of the Inspector Rutledge series.

Revisado: 02-25-20
I listened to the Audible book until the last chapters. Linda Stephens did an excellent job but after 50 years since first reading Gone with the Wind, needed to read Margaret Mitchell’s words and “hear” her voice. I’m so glad I did. This book is an American classic for a reason. I will read this again and I’m sorry I let so much time pass before I did again

Excellent series
Revisado: 01-20-20
I wish the next three books in this series were offered on Audible. I don’t find the series excessively violent or gruesome when considering the fact this series isn’t in the “cozy” mystery genre. American crime novels can be far more graphic and I was surprised to read some of the reviews regarding this issue. I read the book before I bought the Audible recording so I knew what to expect. I’m glad I did because I would have passed this by based on the negative reviews.
The writing is excellent and one gets an excellent picture of the gritty area of Scotland portrayed. The narration is also excellent. I highly recommend this series.

Wish narration had been better
Revisado: 01-18-20
I first read this book over 40 years ago and was so excited to see it offered on Audible. I wish a better narrator had been chosen. She does not do justice to the flow or beauty of the story and is simply a mediocre reader.
The book was a 5* story but the narration brought it down to a 3*. A shame because the plot and location offers the reader so much.

It's not always a question of "whodunit?" Sometimes there's more mystery in the why or how. And although we usually know the unhealthy fates of both victim and perpetrator, what of those clever few who plan and carry out the perfect crime? The ones who aren't brought down even though they're found out? And what about those who do the finding out who witness a murder or who identify the murderer but keep the information to themselves? These are some of the mysteries that we follow through those six stories.

Almost missed a great short story
Revisado: 01-02-20
This short story has everything a good novel offers the reader. An opening that grabs the reader’s attention, characters that hold that attention, and a storyline that is unique. The writing is excellent and the narration brings the story of a man’s love for his wife alive. I felt as satisfied when I finished as I do when I’ve finished a well-written novel.
I’m so glad I didn’t pass this by.
