Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

I stumbled upon this book only after the quiet onset documentary, riveting is an understatement. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have a bad relationship with my mother, but I’m glad Jenette told her story as I do hope she keeps writing .

Historia
Jackson Ghasnavi is a lot of things—a techie, a smoothie afficionado, a totally not obsessive list-maker—but one thing he’s not is a romantic. And why would he be? He’s already had a front row seat to his parents’ divorce and picked up the pieces of his sister Jasmine’s broken heart one too many times.

Scratch everything
Revisado: 04-13-24
The narrator makes it unbearable to listen to no matter how many times you speed it. Certain words spoken can really grit your teeth. The story is very juvenile. A lot of talk about kissing. And not much storyline, which is a shame because I love Adib Khorram.

Revisado: 04-03-24
Not many horror stories will introduce you to a final girl that has such beautiful depth but that’s not something Stephen Graham Jones. It’s final bow you want to tied properly, and it does.

Historia
This forest isn't charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina's is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn't reach the bunker in time.

I’ve never read A.M. Shine until now, but this was definitely a book that made me want to read more of this author’s books.

It’s not that it’s shocking anymore. The main character parishes before and then the other entries, George RR Martin sort of pay the way for it. I love that this paved way for Cassie. It’s very True Detective meets silence of the lambs. I loved it.

Revisado: 03-21-24
Picture Rayne and Delilah in the place of Carly and Sam from Icarly but with realistic dialogue and running a horror show on a b grade network. Throw in some heart that only Jeff Zentner can deliver. I cannot believe I didn’t review this book sooner. This one has a lot of heart.

I took my time with this one. It’s slow burn for sure. A Boston crime thriller that is as relentless with racism, violence, and flawed human beings.

Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Lucas Goodgame lives in Majestic, Pennsylvania, a quaint suburb that has been torn apart by a recent tragedy. Everyone in Majestic sees Lucas as a hero—everyone, that is, except Lucas himself. Insisting that his deceased wife, Darcy, visits him every night in the form of an angel, Lucas spends his time writing letters to his former Jungian analyst Karl. It is only when Eli, an 18-year-old young man whom the community has ostracized, begins camping out in Lucas’s backyard that an unlikely alliance takes shape and the two begin a journey to heal their neighbors and themselves.
