Historia
One of SFX magazine's Most Anticipated Books for 2016. An epic vision of man and machine in the far reaches of space. Carlos is dead. A soldier who died for his ideals a 1000 years ago, he's been reincarnated and conscripted to fight an A.I. revolution in deep space. And he's not sure he's fighting for the right side. Seba is alive. By a fluke of nature, a contractual overlap and a loop in its subroutines, this lunar mining robot has gained sentience.

Interesting concept, well executed
Revisado: 12-05-24
What’s real? What’s not? Does it matter? AI lawyers in space (still a nuisance)! All these concepts come together in a very thought provoking and entertaining book. I like a book that makes you pay attention to follow the plot.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

I don't get the hype
Revisado: 03-11-24
Generally, when I see that something has won a Hugo award, I feel confident that it's going to be a great book. I also saw the thousands of rave reviews so I was very interested. Fast-forward to the end and I'm sitting here scratching my head because I honestly don't get the hype. I found the characters to be 1-dimensional and the writing cliché. I also disliked the narration - I don't care for her cadence and thought many of her accents were just terrible. I know i'm in the minority with this opinion and I wish I liked it, but it wasn't even "ok" for me.

Historia
This is the way the world ends, for the last time. The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever. Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

Couldn't be bothered to finish
Revisado: 03-11-24
I read reviews for this series and knew it had won several awards so I was excited to check it out. I'm sitting here scratching my head because I honestly don't get the hype. I found the characters to be 1-dimensional and the writing cliché. I decided to give the second book a go and I realized after not listening to it for a week, that I didn't care to finish. I also disliked the narration - I don't care for her cadence and thought many of her accents were just terrible. Unpopular opinion - it's just not that good.

Historia
There is a world that hangs suspended between triumph and catastrophe, between the dismantling of the Wall and the fall of the Twin Towers, frozen in the shadow of suicide terrorism and global financial collapse. Such a world requires a firm hand and a guiding light. But does it need the Concern: an all-powerful organization with a malevolent presiding genius, pervasive influence and numberless invisible operatives in possession of extraordinary powers?

Not Banks’ Best
Revisado: 01-13-24
Story felt all over the place - like it was a short story that was then padded out to a full novel. There’s an entire character arc that goes nowhere! Overall disappointed in the end.

Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

“The smile didn’t meet his eyes”
Revisado: 10-10-23
I have a rule with books, if the author uses the phrase “his/her/the smile didn’t meet the eyes” more than 3 times I’m out. The book was already melodramatic and I was struggling to stick it out. why do editors let authors use the same phrases over and over? World building was terrible, the characters were cliché and two dimensional. I know I’m apparently in the minority with that opinion, but this book pales in comparison to The Golem and the Jinn.

Historia
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Libertarian diatribe
Revisado: 08-10-23
There were interesting aspects to this book but as a whole it felt uneven. The oddest part was the injection of ultra conservative (fine if that’s your beliefs) rants that felt out of place in the book and almost felt like an afterthought.

Ultimately falls flat
Revisado: 07-12-23
I think if you are a fan of Neal Stephenson, you will most likely enjoy this book. I found the entire premise of this book just too implausible to really enjoy. That’s not to say that there were not some interesting parts but overall just too much of a stretch.

Historia
Ambassador Mahit Dzmare arrives in the center of the multi-system Teixcalaanli Empire only to discover that her predecessor, the previous ambassador from their small but fiercely independent mining station, has died. But no one will admit that his death wasn't an accident - or that Mahit might be next to die, during a time of political instability in the highest echelons of the imperial court. Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her station from Teixcalaan's unceasing expansion.

A Hugo award?
Revisado: 02-24-22
This book is not bad by any means but it’s also not great. Premise is interesting but the writing is weak. Character development, world-building, dialogue, etc. all leave something to be desired. All in all it was a bit dull and I guess I’m just surprised it won the Hugo.

Historia
The ITS Santa Maria is a generation ship in the truest sense—her colonial mission to the alluringly habitable TRAPPIST-1 system will span several. Her crew, though, original and descendent both, need not necessarily accept their lot to live and die between the stars. Greased elbows and palms tend to lubricate a path toward longevity. Wealth aboard Santa Maria is measured not in dollars and cents, but in Minutes and Seconds. Work, favors, and shrewdness are paid in Minutesand Minutes are spent in Suspension.

Fails to live up to potential
Revisado: 01-19-22
I can’t help feeling like this book could have been so much more. I didn’t end up really caring about any of the characters or what might happen to them. My biggest complaint is the abrupt ending. I can’t remember the last time a book slammed the door in my face like this. I’m used to ambiguous endings but with this books you feel like it built up to it and the rest is up to you interpretation. Here it simply feels like the last quarter of the book was missing.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Absolutely beautiful
Revisado: 01-02-22
By far my favorite book of the year and definitely in my top 5 all-time favorites. How all these seemingly separate stories are threaded together and converge at the end is so beautiful. Narration is also top-notch and do a great job bringing the novel to life.
