Kristin Hannah does it again…
Revisado: 03-27-24
Kristin Hannah is an ultimate bard of historical fiction, capturing moments that anyone with an ounce of empathy cannot help but be transported into the worlds and timelines she synthesizes.
It should be noted anyone with PTSD be careful and aware this book touches on several difficult, possible trigger, subjects such as graphic descriptions of war and violence, misogyny, abandonment, infertility, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide. That said, after she pulls you through the mud, she does leave you with a final message of hope, just not a sticky-sweet ending that would diminish the power of the story.
Her narrative is so visceral, so honest, and recognizes the Vietnam War for what it was. Where many books can romanticize, Hannah keeps it real.
Aside from this book review, it always bothered me, the lack of honor given to Vietnam veterans, and the need for care our veterans deserve. This radio silence has continued through Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Whether you agree with war or not, honoring the sacrifice so many make should be a priority. When will it truly change?

Historia
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Amazing audio performance, gripping book
Revisado: 12-27-22
Perfect in every way… twists and turns, mystery, intrigue, all of it. A perfect book for winter and snuggling in by a fire. I love how the narration felt like being in a gossip session more than storytelling. Must listen audiobook, would also be a great read.

A Must Read or Hear: A Most Thorough Historical Fiction
I listened to the audiobook and read the accompanying pdf with family pictures. For the obsessed genealogist, this book succinctly brings to life the documents and research one must do to "find family" left behind in lost memories. The narrative imagines and recounts stories to fill in the gaps, and research of different events in history weave through like a well-knit sweater. For anyone interested in the great European migration of the late 1800s and early 1900s, this book will capture your imagination and inspire you to dig deeper. For the audiobook listener, you will hear Barb's absolutely charming North Dakota accent. It made me a little homesick for my own North Dakota family I had to leave behind to make my way in the world. A thousand thanks to Barb Solberg for this wonderful creation! And thanks to my childhood swim coach Patrice Mitchell for recommending this amazing book.

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

I loved the audiobook and am considering purchasing paperback. This book is truly a primer of how to practice mindfulness and find peace in your life. His stories are engaging and the narration is heartfelt and authentic. I devoured the book and plan to listen to it more than once, which is something I seldom do!

What an amazing book. It's like Lord of the Rings meets Harry Potter. I don't remember the last time that I have been this engrossed in an audiobook. The narrator was amazing, and the story was awesome.

Historia
For the last several years, Penn and Kim Holderness of The Holderness Family have done the hard maintenance and the research to learn how to fight better. With the help of their marriage coach Dr. Christopher Edmonston, they break down their biggest (and in some cases, funniest) fights. How did a question about chicken wings turn into a bra fight (no, not a bar fight; a bra fight)? How did a roll of toilet paper lead to tears, resentment, and a stint in the guest bedroom?

Like a book and a podcast
Revisado: 04-29-21
It's surprising to me that they were able to go off script so often in their book and have it approved by Audible, but I really liked it. This book probably would not work with whisper sync technology, LOL. The subject matter of the book is very well written. The commentary during the book was not distracting and added to the flavor of the audiobook. I think the audiobook is probably richer than the written version, because of the commentary. I really enjoy Kim's blog and their scripts. The audiobook is a beautiful marriage of the two. Most of these types of self-help books seem to be geared more towards women, but I think this book would be enjoyable to men who want to figure out what Venus is all about. I'm going to try to get my husband to listen to this when we take a summer trip by car. Overall, one of the best audiobooks for relationships that I've heard.

A blizzard, frostbite, and murder
Revisado: 02-29-20
The beginning 40% of the book was captivating and I couldn’t stop listening. The description of the blizzard, the cold, was so realistic, I felt like I was there. I literally felt swept up in the storm. Narrator Eric Allen was on point.
Though I wish the book would have focused more on the intrigue and romance of the two main characters, Cam and Lily, and less on the government agents, murders, racism, and a flashback story about civil rights, I understand the author was trying to get a point across.
I wish I could have stayed in Cam’s cabin and not have needed to deal with the sadness and murder that lay await through the rest of the book.
The issues of human trafficking, an underpinning of the plot line, are very real, and unfortunately, there is rarely a happy ending. It seemed like there were just a few too many social issues to handle in one book.
And, I wonder if perhaps I am just a simpleton yelling at my audiobook for Cam and Lily to get some private time without someone shooting at them or a bad guy trying to kidnap Lily’s nephew.
It lost a star on me with the indeterminate ending on the romance. It also seemed like Mr. Allen had a bad cold toward the end of the narration.
Would I listen to it again, despite my personal preference for escapism and adolescent desire for a super happy ending? Absolutely. For someone that scours the earth for good quality, “well-written” audio books, this was a long and enjoyable “read” for me. It was well done and held my attention.
