Historia
Before 1862, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers.

Great Bio
Revisado: 12-31-24
I loved this biography! White's writing is detailed but smooth. Thorough but not cumbersome. Educational and entertaining. This work is as much about Chamberlain's academic life as much as his Civil War heroics.

A great, fast-paced read. My one critique is a spoiler, so I'll keep that to myself. While reading, I thought this would be a found footage situation. It would make a great limited TV series.

Fantastic overview of the history of the Romans without having to read an academic or thousand-page book. Great job by the narrator.
One note for the publisher: The audio is too quiet and likely at the low end of the required RMS.

In this brilliant biography T. J. Stiles offers a new understanding of the legendary outlaw Jesse James. Although he has often been portrayed as a Robin Hood of the old west, in this ground-breaking work Stiles places James within the context of the bloody conflicts of the Civil War to reveal a much more complicated and significant figure.

Top Notch
Revisado: 11-10-24
I've read multiple works on Jesse James, the Younger Brothers, and Confederate guerilla operations. This bio of James should be at the top of your reading list in this genre. Stiles provides a thorough telling of the political climate before, during, and after the Civil War. The narration is perfect.

The Civil War is most remembered for the grand battles that have come to define it: Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, among others. However, as bestselling author Patrick K. O’Donnell reveals in The Unvanquished, a vital shadow war raged amid and away from the major battlefields that was in many ways equally consequential to the conflict’s outcome.

Military History at its Finest
Revisado: 05-22-24
These are the stories Hollywood looks for. Irregular warfare is as old as war itself and The Civil War had its share of covert operations, spies, and lightning-quick forces. O'Donnell delivers again as one of America's premier combat historians.
Sanders delivers with smooth narration.

Revisado: 09-28-23
I love business books that don't read like business books. This is a biography of a company. How they did it. No platitudes you've heard dozens of times. Randolph does not hold back from the good or the bad. Great read!
I don't recommend authors read their own books, but he did a find job.

Historia
According the New York Times’ “1619 Project”, America was not founded in 1776, with a declaration of freedom and independence, but in 1619 with the introduction of African slavery into the New World. Ever since then, the “1619 Project” argues, American history has been one long sordid tale of systemic racism.

Truth Bomb
Revisado: 10-03-22
Grabar provides the proof why the 1919 Project is propaganda, not history. We should not view it as something that should be taught in schools. Historiography 101 teaches that we don't cherry-pick sources to shape our narrative. The narrative should flow out of the research just as we we box-in the answer to an algebraic equation. Poor history (or ideology disguised as history) causes ridiculousness such as the tearing down the statue of Hans Christian Heg, an abolitionist.

Historia
Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States has sold over 2.5 million copies and is still required reading in some high school and college classrooms. But its polemic rewriting of American history as a story of oppression is an agenda-driven fairy tale that has no place in academia. In Debunking Howard Zinn, Mary Grabar debunks Howard Zinn’s lies and traces the damage his mega-bestseller has done to American education, culture, and politics.

Historiography 101
Revisado: 09-14-22
Grabar has graded Zinn's purported work of history and gave him the grade he deserves—an F. It's the grade any graduate student would earn for abandoning any semblance of historical work and only delivering propaganda. Worse, he abandoned valued sources, used quotes out of context, and made assumptions based on his own desired outcome. Don't burn Zinn's book. Buy Grabar's book and learn the truth about how historiography should work. Pam Ward's narration really delivered.
