Historia
Eighteen-year-old Stella Sandell stands accused of the brutal murder of a man almost 15 years her senior. She is an ordinary teenager from an upstanding local family. What reason could she have to know a shady businessman, let alone to kill him? Stella’s father, a pastor, and mother, a criminal defense attorney, find their moral compasses tested as they defend their daughter, while struggling to understand why she is a suspect.

At times compelling
Revisado: 09-04-24
Stella’s section is compelling. The parents drag a bit and could be shorted. Overall, it’s still an excellent listen for Scandinavian mystery and noir fans. I read this before seeing the series, and I’m glad to have read the novel beforehand.

Slowly drew me in
Revisado: 08-18-24
At first, the narrative seemed disjointed, and, in general, I’m not fond of multiple voice actors. I struggled to maintain interest. However, the story became compelling. This is a well crafted, and ultimately, surprising novel. I intend to read the author’s first novel. Not to be missed by fans of Scandinavian noir. Five stars all around.

But when Lily steps outside she is paralysed with terror. The child is bathed in blood. Inspector Sejer is called to the hospital to meet the family. Mercifully, the baby is unharmed, but her parents are deeply shaken, and Sejer spends the evening trying to comprehend why anyone would carry out such a sinister prank.

Inspector Sejer on the case
Revisado: 08-09-24
Another good Inspector Sejer mystery. The series isn’t about mastermind serial killers. The crimes and murders are caused by relatively average people with compelling personal narratives. No SA or torture, but instead full of pathos.

Historia
When perpetual bachelor Gunder Jomann goes to India for two weeks and comes home married, the town of Elvestad is stunned. On the day the Indian bride is supposed to arrive, the battered body of a woman is found in a meadow on the outskirts of town. None of the "good people of Elvestad" can believe that anyone among them would be capable of such a brutal murder. But in his quiet, formal way, Inspector Konrad Sejer understands that good people can commit atrocious deeds, and that no one is altogether innocent.

Not my favorite Fossum but worthwhile
Revisado: 07-27-24
As a big Fossum as well as the Inspector Sejer series, this is my least favorite. It’s still a worthwhile listen for Nordic Noir fans. I suggest reading her novels in order. Unfortunately, Audible doesn’t offer all, and I’m bereft after finishing the last of them.

Historia
A gruesome tableau awaits Inspector Konrad Sejer in the oppressive summer heat: a woman and a young boy lay dead in a pool of blood near a dank trailer. The motivation behind the deaths of Bonnie Hayden and her five-year-old son, Simon, is mysterious—there is no sign of robbery. Who would brutally stab a defenseless woman and her child? In a parallel story, another mother, Mass Malthe, navigates life with her adult son, Eddie. It's a relationship some would call too close, since Eddie's father, a man he obsesses over, abandoned them many years ago.

The saddest of the series
Revisado: 07-24-24
I’ll just say this is a very good, excellent even, Scandinavian mystery, handled with Fossum’s usual empathy for her characters. The plot, like her other mysteries, elegantly intertwines character motives. It’s important to note, the identity of the criminal isn’t the surprise; the real interest, to me at least, is watching the plots converge, gradually illuminating the motives. I highly recommend Fossum for Nordic noir fans.

One of Fossum’s best
Revisado: 07-14-24
Fossum forgoes the sadistic serial killer trope. In Inspector Sejer’s world, murder is the result of miscommunication, accident, panic, and frustration. I enjoy these mysteries for their commonplace settings in which Fossum presents murder with a lowercase m. I suggest Nordic noir fans read the books in order and see Sejer’s gentle character development.

Story isn’t as intricate as some of Fossum’s best, but it’s laced with her trademark character insight.
This isn’t my favorite of Fossum’s; however for Nordic noir fans, it’s still essential. I’m reading the Inspector Sejer series and pleased Audible updated their catalog.

Someone rated this with two stars, and I disagree. Eva's Eye is an excellent way to start the Inspector Sejer series. This book is a little more gory than previous in the series, but not too bad. The intricate braiding of the subplots is deft and nimble, and the narrator is perfect.

Tops in sci-fi Soviet fiction
Revisado: 02-19-24
All I can say is the finale is the most satisfying and resonant I’ve read, and the entire novel avoids a moment of slack. The protagonist is as transparent, vulnerable, battered, and transcendent as any Dostoevsky character. The narration choice put me off at first with the gruff NY accent, but after a few minutes, it felt perfect.
Boy, does this novel stick the landing.
