Historia
On the first snowy night of winter, Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope sets off for her home in the hills. Though the road is familiar, she misses a turning and soon becomes lost and disorientated. A car has skidded off the narrow road in front of her, its door left open, and she stops to help. There is no driver to be seen, so Vera assumes that the owner has gone to find help. But a cry calls her back: a toddler is strapped in the back seat.

Narration hurt my teeth
Revisado: 11-10-20
I wish Audible would stop changing narrators for the fine work of Ann Cleeves. Janine Birkett is the worst one on the list, and when she voiced Juliette I wanted to slap her. She did fine with Vera, but it makes for choppy, uneven listening and I won't waste a credit on any more of her productions.

TOOOOOOOOO LOOOOOOOOOONG
Revisado: 10-28-20
PART 1: More than halfway through, and I'm way tired of the poetry excerpts, and way, way way tired of the convoluted back-and-forth of the astrological discussions. (Seriously?) Too many non-essential threads, too much of Robin being a wimp , pages of boredom. JK is a good writer, but I was very disappointed in this slog. Maybe I'll change my mind and come back with an updated review when I'm finished. Maybe.
PART 2: Guess not. I'm listening to the denouement as I type, and I'm like alright, already, get it over with. Tepid enjoyment that Robin and Strike finally started talking like grownups. Yes, Janice was a surprise but who cares? Certainly not me. I still think this was way too long and had too many threads waving in the breeze. Several times names would be mentioned and I wouldn't even remember who they were. In the beginning, I investigated so I could keep up. Towards the end, I couldn't be bothered. Since The Cuckoo's Calling (very good), the Cormoran Strike books have maintained a steady downward stairstep, and I'm going to let myself off the hook and call it a day.

Historia
Sir Tode has finally died at the age of 93. Lady Tode wants to leave the country to spend her remaining years in Capri. Unfortunately, her three tiresome children are either unwilling, or unable (too mad, too lefty or too happy in Australia), to take on management of their large and important home, so the mantle passes to a distant relative and his glamorous wife. Not long after the new owners take over, Lady Tode is found dead in the mausoleum. Accident? Or is there more going on behind the scenes of Tode Hall than an outsider would ever guess?

Couldn't find any "hilarity"
Revisado: 05-30-20
Promising premise but very dull delivery. Any "humor" reminded me of the all-too-obvious Jim Carrey/Adam Sandler variety, which repels me. I like my humor a little more subtle. There were passages which were acceptable, but they were outnumbered by a lot of tedium.

Historia
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: A man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death.

A pleasant enough voice, but narrates dialogue in a rapid-fire, choppy manner that had me constantly rewinding to try to understand what I had just heard. Not worth it.

A deeply unpleasant story
Revisado: 07-31-19
filled with deeply unpleasant characters. Ugh!
Book 2 in this series was much less objectionable, but there is a problem with the narration with that one too. The narration itself is fine, but there is a technical glitch. I am not even a little deaf,, but in order to hear either recording, I had to keep the player within arms reach.
No recommendation from me.

It's just OK
Revisado: 05-06-19
There were sections of this book that I enjoyed very much. Mostly those involving the protagonist's best friend. The story itself flows along smoothly enough and then it's like it hits a quagmire and the storyline veers off course and gets dull as ditchwater. Then it will pick up again. An odd, broken rhythm, which finally had me reaching for the Return button. I wouldn't really recommend it.

Revisado: 08-10-18
you might enjoy this story. I did, when I was 13 or 14, and it is embarrassing to admit that. This heroine's spunkiness beggars belief, as does her stupidity. And her willingness, even eagerness, to believe - based on zero evidence - that her ex-husband is a sick, twisted, serial killer is appalling. And her inability to shoot the real killer as he inexorably advances on her is disgusting.
Ugh.

Thank heavens for George Guidall
Revisado: 07-28-18
Probably wouldn't have finished this one except that George was narrating. Got way, way, way tired of Walt chasing the evildoers - even after the perp was dead - while his daughter lay in the hospital in intensive care. C'mon, Walt, you can continue your Superman act after she's out of danger. Didn't like that Cady selected such a waste of space for her fiancee in the first place, seemed wildly out of character. Didn't like the suggested interplay between Vic and her mother either, as in major yuk. Come to think of it, Walt's reminiscing passages include Berkeley and Viet Nam in the 60s which makes him what, 70 or 75. Still a good lawman, but physically attractive to a tall, gorgeous, 20-something? Bull-pucky, as they say in Absaroka County.

OK, I'm done
Revisado: 07-28-18
As The Crow Flies was so outstanding that I decided to binge on Walt and Henry Standing Bear, so I got Kindness Goes Unpunished and Any Other Name. Kindness got downright boring, what with Walt's relentless chase after the bad guy while Cady lay in the hospital fighting for her life with strangers for company. He's just a little too dedicated for my understanding or enjoyment. But Henry Standing Bear was there, so I finished it. There were other more minor irritations, like why did the independent, intelligent and beautiful Cady ever select such an ick for a fiancee in the first place, but I could get past that.
Not this one, however. Here we go again, with motherless Cady needing/wanting him while she has her first child, his agreeing to be there, and allowing himself to be led down a cold case trail instead. It was a COLD case - why couldn't it have waited until his return? I'm only a few pages in, and have now decided that the only character in these stories that I don't like is Walt Longmire. I'll just re-read the books that were really good when the time rolls around, and hope that Craig Johnson comes to his senses and lays off the superhero thread.
