Historia
A massive invasion of a major Monarch world gets underway and the weird warrant officers of Voodoo Platoon move into their roles as combat multipliers at the front lines of an incredible no-holds-barred brawl for battlefield domination. Facing legions of Ultramarines, a weaponized population, and re-engineered combat veterans augmented by cybernetics, the stone-cold killers and ready-to-rumble rogues of Strange, fighting alongside a newly christened mech combat team, must hold a gateway landing zone against overwhelming odds.

Wonderful follow on
Revisado: 12-11-24
This writing is really, really well done. Nick Cole has an amazing writer’s voice and you get fully into the story. I mentioned there are shades of The Black Company and The Things They Carried in my previous review, and it holds true here too. Add in allusions to The Dark Tower and you have an excellent work of writing, narrated brilliantly by Christopher Grant.
You gotta be honest about these things.

Historia
Surrounded and outgunned, a group of private military contractors known as “Strange Company” find themselves on a remote planet at the edge of known space, and on the losing end of a bad contract. Orbital D-beam strikes, dropships bristling with auto-guns, missiles, and troops - even Monarch space marines in state-of-the-art advanced battle rattle - will try to prevent the company from reaching the exfil LZ and getting off-world.

Imagine a blending of Glen Cook’s The Black Company with Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried. Throw in some Apocalypse Now and season it all with James S. A. Corey’s The Expanse. Now serve it up with an excellent narration by Christopher Ryan Grant. Please be seated and dig in, you’ll be sure to enjoy this.

Revisado: 08-21-24
Love this series. Really enjoy ol’ James McGill. Mark Boyett is an absolute legend of a voice actor. Incredibly recreates regional accents. South East Georgia of McGill, Texas of Leeson, Eastern European of Galina Turov, gravely Midwestern of Graves, wow. Even when the stories became a bit predictable, Mr. Boyett’s voice acting made every single one enjoyable and entertaining. Highly recommended.

Unexpectedly wonderful!
Revisado: 07-20-24
I have so many audiobooks that I’ve read that are good. Not great, but good, and that’s just fine for the majority of my listening experience. On occasion, I come across one that’s really wonderful. Unexpectedly wonderful, and it’s like finding a treasure where you might not think of looking. This is one of those books. Highly recommended, dear reader.

Revisado: 07-04-24
I’ve never really run into a bad book in this series. So enjoyable with the depth of characters and the well-crafted story. Tine and again I found myself pleasantly surprised by the plot twists, reminiscent of works by Glen Cook (Black Company series) and William Gibson (Sprawl trilogy). Recommended for fantasy aficionados.

Historia
It is the summer of 2013, and Abigail Kamara has been left to her own devices. This might, by those who know her, be considered a mistake. While her cousin, police constable and apprentice wizard Peter Grant, is off in the sticks chasing unicorns, Abigail is chasing her own mystery. Teenagers around Hampstead Heath have been going missing, but before the police can get fully engaged, the teens return home - unharmed but vague about where they've been.

Exceeding expectations
Revisado: 04-04-24
I am a huge fan of Ben Aaronovitch and the Rivers of London series. Especially the narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. So this was different, and my expectations were muted. However, Shvorne Marks was excellent as Abigail, but her Nightingale left a little to be desired, as might be expected. Definitely worth purchasing.

My name is Cade Ombra, and though I currently make my living as a mercenary wonderist, I used to have a far more noble-sounding job title—until I discovered the people I worked for weren't quite as noble as I'd believed. Now I'm on the run and my only friend, a homicidal thunder mage, has invited me to join him on a suicide mission against the seven deadliest mages on the continent. Time to recruit some very bad people to help us on this job.

This was really enjoyable
Revisado: 02-27-24
I really like urban fantasy or dark fantasy. I like high fantasy too, but the kind of stories where the good guys aren’t exactly all that good really appeal to me. This one’s like that. Well crafted, well written, and I didn’t have very high expectations when I got it, so it was all the more enjoyable. If I had one thing to nitpick, I would have made the chapters longer. Story still flows the way it’s written, but longer chapters would’ve been nice. Narration was amazing. I am definitely picking up the next book in the series.

Satisfying
Revisado: 02-15-24
I have to admit I didn’t expect to enjoy a book like this from the author of the Columbus Day series. That sarcastic beer can that everyone loves isn’t found in these pages. This is pure sword and sorcery, perhaps with a young adult flavor. I think it just goes to show that good authors will find a way to make different genres interesting. Well done.

Wow. One of the best books I’ve come across in a long while. Excellent story, excellent narration. If you have a credit, it would be well worth it to spend it on this book. I’m definitely looking for more by Peter Flannery.
