All of Franklin Horton's books are automatic downloads for me and will continue to be. As long as there are more stories about these characters and their world I will continue listening. Even though this book wasn't as fast paced or as full of action as the past books in the series, it was still a very enjoyable listen . At some point the story has to pivot, it has been a while since the "apocalypse" started. This book takes the story in a new direction. I'm sure in future books there will be plenty of action, suspense and mayhem to go around, especially after the semi crossover of the 2 series. Even though each series is still independent I loved the previous crossover of these characters into the Mad Mick series. Although there is no crossover of characters in this book I hope to see more of it in the future.

Just to clarify Jim was not "starting a whorehouse", ladies who are trying to survive their various circumstances have banded together in an effort to support each other and are already running a brothel. Jim offers them a business arrangement as a way to bring in more customers to the Roadhouse they are setting up. A Roadhouse they envision as serving several purposes. It is absolutely hilarious that the ladies decline Jim's offer as they feel he will tarnish their reputations. Anyone who has listened to this series by now has been exposed to numerous things that are all likely to occur in a SHTF situation. Killing, murder, torture, theft, starvation, government corruption, etc, have all been a part of the series. It is a SHTF series , the apocalypse will never be rated G. Although I will concede that I was a little surprised Jim would even consider the ladies being part of the roadhouse, but he had his reasons.

As always Kevin Pierce does an absolutely fantastic job narrating the story. The books wouldn't be the same without him.

This was an enjoyable, entertaining and easy listen.

Even though this is part of a series it can be read as a standalone book.

As with any Alien/Human relationship there are going to be misunderstandings and communication issues. While both the characters got on my nerves at one point or another in the story, in end they both become likable and you can’t help but root for them and their HEA.

The characters were good.

Both narrators did a great job. Nice voices that are easy to listen to for long periods of time. Their narration flowed smoothly and evenly.

The synopsis tells you everything you need to know about the story going in except that it's a really enjoyable listen with fantastic narration. The story pulled me in right away and held my attention until the very end. Every time I had to pause the story I couldn't wait to get back to it.

While all the characters are good and eventually all likable, Ollie Steals the show right from the start. Great character

The narration was great as well. Both narrators do a fantastic job as usual bringing the story to life. Both have great voices that easy to listen to for long periods of time. Their narration flows smoothly and evenly with great character voices adding to the overall enjoyment of the book.

A very enjoyable story that's full of action, suspense, unexpected twists and a bit of humor all combined with excellent narration that made a great story come alive and turned it into a fantastic listen.

Even though I didn't listen to the first book in the series it didn't take me too long to figure out who was who and what was going on. Although based on my enjoyment of this book I will definitley be going back and listening to the first book in the series as well as continuing with the rest of the series. Some series are worth going back to the beginning even though you know what happens next. This is one of them. It was that enjoyable of a listen.

Story pulled me in right away and held my attention. Great, interesting and unusual characters.

Amy Hall did an awesome job with the narration. Nice voice that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. Her narration is clear, smooth and flows perfectly. Great character voices.

3.5 stars
I'm undecided on this book. There are certain parts I really, really liked that would be 5 stars and then there are parts that I hated that took away from my overall enjoyment of the story. I listened to the story 3 different times and in the end my initial thoughts on the story stayed the same.

All in all an it's a good start to a potentially really great series and an entertaing listen with plenty of action, interesting characters and unexpected twists. The story pulled me in immediately but as the story went on it lost me , pulled me back in, lost me again and then pulled me back in. The story would pull me in then there would be something that happened and my reaction was .. WTH ..why? Example - The repeated sexual dreams turning into nightmares, the attempted sexual assault by an infected. The numerous descriptive sex fantasies/nightmares were unnecessary and all it did for me was make the MC seem creepy/sleezy and unhinged at times. Karle's thoughts about how her body looks in a descriptive sexual way also took away from the likability of the characters. If your in the middle of a Zombie apocalypse are you really going to be thinking about sex that much.

I did like the fact that Chris and Karle both for the most part seem to be smart and ruthless (especially Chris) enough to do what needs to be done to survive. If your in a SHTF situation Chris is the kind of guy you would want by your side. In a lot of stories the MC's are too stupid to live, that’s not the case here which is a huge bonus. Both Chris and Karle were great characters aside from the above mentioned issue.

Terrible way to end the book. The very last line wasn't needed at all.

Even though there were things I didn't like about the story I will most definitley listen to the next book in the series. I'm interested to see where the author takes the story and the characters. It has the potential to turn into a fantastic series.

My first reaction was hmm…odd choice to have a female narrator when most of the story is from a male point of view. This is the first time I have listened to a book narrated by Amanda Vargas and her narration was good. Pleasant voice, smooth flow and easy to listen to. She could use a little bit more distinction between the characters voices. I would definitley listen to other books narrated by her.

Overall a very entertaining, interesting and engaging story. It pulled me in quickly and kept my attention. Once I started the book, every time I had to pause my listening for some reason I was in a hurry to get right back to the story. Any book that I can't wait to get back to is a great story.

While this is a dystopian story and completely fictional it has certain elements/aspects that are quite scary and could come close to reality in the not too distant future if things continue the way they are. (The religious persecution of certain people, the cashless society, conformity or ostracization, etc).

Several times throughout the story when the characters were in different situations I thought about different groups of people throughout the world who have or are currently being persecuted, the people who helped them, those that stood by and watched silently, and those that actively worked to persecute others.

Great cast of characters. Both likable and unlikable. Good vs Evil. The cast of "good guys" were all fantastic characters. Of coarse you can't help but root for those being targeted by the ruling party. Without giving anything away… did you really have to kill that character…that was a gut punch.

Overall the narration was good. Mr. Wolff has a voice that is easy to listen to, even for long periods of time. With more practice he could become a really good narrator. He had some really good character voices. Of coarse the male voices were great. Although there was enough emotion, feeling and inflection in most of the narration that made the characters come to life, at times the narration also seemed flat. I also thought the narration could have flowed a bit more smoothly at times, especially since these are his written words. As I said before overall the narration was good, my personal likes and dislikes about the narration in no way effected my overall enjoyment of the story. I would definitley listen to other books he chooses to narrate in the future.

I was really looking forward to this book. So it's was a huge disappointment when i had to throw in the towel on this one. It just wasn't holding my attention. I struggled to get as far as i did. I started and stopped it several times. After 6 hours if a story isn't holding my attention it's time to move on. Since i didn't listen to the whole story I don't know if it's fair for me to give the star ratings i have, but they are for the amount of time i did listen. I will be taking advantage of Audibles return policy and returning this book.

I really enjoyed this book. Great story with fantastic narration. It's a well written, very entertaining good solid story. This one will keep you guessing. It will pull you in from the start and never lets go for a minute. Even though it's not a fast-paced story it does constantly move forward at a nice steady pace slowly building. Just because it builds at a slower pace doesn't mean it's any less engaging or interesting. A story doesn't have to be fast paced and full of non-stop action to pull you in, hold your complete attention and keep the suspense building.

Along with an interesting cast of characters there is plenty of mystery, suspense and twists you won't see coming until suddenly it all comes together.

Dave Trosko and Morgan Laure both did a fantastic job with the narration. They both have voices that are easy to listen to for long periods of time. Dave Trosko's voice is almost hypnotic. I mean that in a good way. Is this really the first book he has narrated? His voice just pulls you into the story. Morgan Laure's voice is also great. With just a slight change in tone and cadence her male voices were also very good. Their voices compliment each other. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Really good character voices. They brought the characters and the story to life. Very enjoyable.

Wow. Great start to a series. It's definitely a 5 star listen and worth your credit. There are just some stories that grab a hold of you and don't slow down for a minute and all you can do is hold on for the ride. This is one of those books.

It's a creative, well written, and fast paced story that pulled me in immediately and held my complete attention from start to finish. Very entertaining and engaging with a
great storyline and an interesting cast of characters. It's an apocalyptic/alien invasion story with plenty of suspense and action with a bit of romance and a very interesting twist.

A story is only as good as it's characters. Even a great story can be ruined by unlikable characters. That doesn't happen here. All the characters are well rounded and interesting. Both likable and unlikable. Bixby is an awesome character. Strong, confident and independent with a hardened exterior that she uses to hide her inner vulnerability from all but a few.

It's a harsh world that hasn't been kind to the survivors of the invasion. They have been living in a destroyed world full of enemies for 8 years. Not only do they have to avoid the leeches(aliens) who are to survive they also have cannibalistic humans to contend with. It's a dark world that they live in and things are about to get worse.

This is definitley a series I will be continuing with. Not sure where things are going to go from here but I see a love triangle coming in the future. I usually hate love triangles but this could prove to be really interesting. I can't say any more about that so I won't give away any spoilers.

Marnye Young does a fantastic job with the narration. She was the perfect narrator for this story. Pleasant voice that is easy to listen to for hours at a time. Her narration pulls you into the story from the first word. Clearly spoken with a nice smooth pace. Great character voices. Both male and female. Each character had a distinct voice and personality. Her male voices are perfect with just a change of cadence and tone. She brought the characters, their emotions and the story to life. Very enjoyable.

Cute, fun, lighthearted, humorous and entertaining story.

I have to admit I'm one of those people that love Survivor so this story was right up my alley. I liked the premise of the story, a small town local version of Survivor. The story it's self is creative and different from any thing else I have read recently and I really enjoyed it. However, I had a hard time with this book. The narration was off for me and that effected my overall enjoyment of the story. I could only listen for a a little at a time.

Great cast of interesting characters representing all those different personality types you would come across in a situation like this. Cane was likable from the start. Megan took a while to warm up to. She started off so shy, meek and self-conscious that I wanted to shake her. Slowly but surely she gains her footing and her confidence grows. Finally she comes into her own and surprises everyone including herself.

The but... This is not the first time I have heard April Richwine narrate a book. This book is not the best example of her work. She has a pleasant voice and some really good character voices that did not show through in this book. For me the narration in this book was off. It just didn't always flow smoothly. There were awkward pauses in the wrong spot at times. At other times it was a tad to fast. A lot of the time she sounded like she was out of breath. Her voice for Megan was too high pitched and became quite annoying at times. Just her normal voice for Megan would have been perfect. Her male character voices are easily distinguishable and sounded really good with just a slight change in tone. They also seem to flow more smoothly for some reason. I would/will listen to other books she narrates in the future.
