Historia
In The Field of Blood, Joanne B. Freeman recovers the long-lost story of physical violence on the floor of the US Congress. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources, she shows that the Capitol was rife with conflict in the decades before the Civil War. Legislative sessions were often punctuated by mortal threats, canings, flipped desks, and all-out slugfests. When debate broke down, congressmen drew pistols and waved Bowie knives. One representative even killed another in a duel. Many were beaten and bullied in an attempt to intimidate them into compliance, particularly on the issue of slavery.

Field of a Blood
Revisado: 12-12-18
Loved the telling of our Congress’ past. If you love the discovery of our ‘dark’ side, you’ll love this! Today’s political turmoil can’t compare.
On a personal note. Several years ago I listened to a Yale University class on the ‘American Revolution’ (my very first audiobook)!taught by Ms. Freeman. Her enthusiasm in teaching and excitement about the subject was life changing for me. It started my path on a love of history. I wish I had a teacher like her in my early school years. She is the reader for this book, as well as being the author. Ms Freeman can become a ‘reader’ if she ever gives up on her current gig!

Historia
Interweaving a grand historical narrative with cutting-edge climate science and genetic discoveries, Kyle Harper traces how the fate of Rome was decided not just by emperors, soldiers, and barbarians but also by volcanic eruptions, solar cycles, climate instability, and devastating viruses and bacteria. He takes listeners from Rome's pinnacle in the second century, when the empire seemed an invincible superpower, to its unraveling by the seventh century, when Rome was politically fragmented and materially depleted.

Fate of Rime
Revisado: 12-12-18
Well researched, obviously. New thoughts about weather and bacteria as regards to the demise of the Empire. I learned a lot, and I’ve read around 15 books on the subject of Rome and its citizens. A fifth star wasn’t given because I needed a dictionary to translate....but maybe the onus is on me!

Historia
William Shakespeare, the most celebrated poet in the English language, left behind nearly a million words of text, but his biography has long been a thicket of wild supposition arranged around scant facts. With a steady hand and his trademark wit, Bill Bryson sorts through this colorful muddle to reveal the man himself.

Historia
The New York Times best-selling author of The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The War of the Roses, historian Alison Weir crafts fascinating portraits of England’s infamous House of Tudor line. Here Weir focuses on Elizabeth I, also known as the Virgin Queen, who ascended to the throne at age 25 and never married, yet ruled for 44 years and steered England into its Golden Age.

Historia
Among the autobiographies of great military figures, Ulysses S. Grant’s is certainly one of the finest, and it is arguably the most notable literary achievement of any American president: a lucid, compelling, and brutally honest chronicle of triumph and failure. From his frontier boyhood, to his heroics in battle, to the grinding poverty from which the Civil War ironically rescued him, these memoirs are a mesmerizing, deeply moving account of a brilliant man told with great courage.

History brought to life!
Revisado: 11-22-12
What did you love best about Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant?
The fact that this is Grant's personal account of events is compelling.
What did you like best about this story?
Details, of course!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Sadness, at the grand scale of losses, on both sides.
Any additional comments?
Absolutely loved the accounts from a personal view. Even though Grant was not an "average" man, we must keep in mind that the accounts were written 20 years after the fact. I'm referring to accounts of personalities, etc. Anyone interested in Civil War history would enjoy this book.
