Historia
Long before the advent of conventional farming methods - which have focused on constant growth, human intervention, and genetic homogeneity - the apple had already grown to become the ubiquitous all-American symbol it is today. Known for their hardiness, ability to adapt to new environments, natural diversity, and plentiful bounty, wildly grown apples were once known as “America’s fruit” throughout the trading world.

Really good narrator
Revisado: 03-28-24
The narrator did a wonderful job on this one. I could see not really getting into this book with the wrong narration, but this guy did such a great job I couldn't stop listening.

One of my all time favorite books
Revisado: 11-21-22
This is one of my all time favorite books that I keep coming back to. You can tell that the author knows a thing or two about what he's writing about. To know more about the author's childhood that contributed to this book read "Father Water Mother Woods" also one of my favorite books.

Historia
Here is the story of how, beginning well before the advent of machine production in the 1780s, these men captured ancient trades and skills in Asia, combined them with the expropriation of lands in the Americas and the enslavement of African workers to crucially recast the disparate realms of cotton that had existed for millennia. We see how industrial capitalism then reshaped these worlds of cotton into an empire, and how this empire transformed the world.

A bit of a capitalist basher
Revisado: 10-27-21
The author clearly had an ax to grind with capitalism and based on what I know from other sources I think that some of his conclusions missed the mark by a good bit. However on the whole I thought it was a good book and I'm glad I listened to it.

Lots of wisdom in this story
Revisado: 07-08-21
This is a retelling of the story of David and Goliath, a story I've heard many times. Listening to this story as an adult I've learned lessons that I missed time and again reading the regular telling of the story. This book is well worth listening to for people of all ages. I will listen again soon.

Revisado: 05-17-21
The story was well written with good character arcs and plot development, however at no point did Jimmy's boa eat the wash. I feel like this was an oversight.

Historia
No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio, or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce. The Way Home is a modern-day Walden - an honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life lived in nature without modern technology. Mark Boyle, author of The Moneyless Man, explores the hard-won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the stream, foraging, and fishing.

Historia
In Jared Diamond’s follow-up to the Pulitzer-Prize winning Guns, Germs and Steel, the author explores how climate change, the population explosion, and political discord create the conditions for the collapse of civilization. Environmental damage, climate change, globalization, rapid population growth, and unwise political choices were all factors in the demise of societies around the world, but some found solutions and persisted.

Hard to listen to
Revisado: 05-11-20
The author does a good job of spelling out the problems, but doesn't seem to have any solutions except population control. I would have liked to hear more about, for instance, the advances in regenerative agriculture that are restoring degraded landscapes right now.
The narrator puts such unnecessarily long pauses at each break that it becomes almost unbearable. I did not think that I could finish at first. I don't know if he got better or I got used to it, but by the end I didn't find that to be much of a problem.
If you like reading about where past civilizations have gone wrong, I would suggest listening to "Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations" by David R. Montgomery.
