Historia
Escaping to NYU for college didn’t turn out the way Cameron planned—he’s flunking his theater classes, about to lose his scholarship, and he still hasn’t found anyone he can call his “people.” When he gets home for winter break, he’s so desperate to avoid a Conversation with his dad that he takes the first acting job he can get—as a mall elf. Despite how Scroogey he feels, the plus side is that there’s a cash prize for the most festive of Santa’s helpers. But the competition is fierce—especially from fellow elf Marco.

I’m not the target audience but I just love the writing
Revisado: 11-09-23
I really like all of David Valdes’ young adult books. I’m a white cisgender heterosexual middle aged male but I really love how funny the characters are. The Hallmark Christmas movies are mostly boring. Somehow this though it had a similar plot the characters were so delightful and funny it really kept my interest. I laughed out loud quite a few times and really ended up cheering for the characters in the end.
I highly recommend this book.

Utilizing his incomparable career and inspired collaborations with Talking Heads, Brian Eno, and many others, David Byrne taps deeply into his lifetime of knowledge to explore the panoptic elements of music, how it shapes the human experience, and reveals the impetus behind how we create, consume, distribute, and enjoy the songs, symphonies, and rhythms that provide the backbeat of life. Byrne’s magnum opus uncovers thrilling realizations about the redemptive liberation that music brings us all.

Like a class I would have liked to take in college

Though I wish there was more from the last 10 years. It got me to think about music in ways I never had before. Definitely worth listening to.

Historia
Amidst the turmoil and loneliness of the pandemic, All of Us Together in the End is a poignant and often humorous investigation into belief set in a time where it seems people will believe anything. It is an elegiac affirmation of the awesome, strange, otherworldly ways our loved ones remain alive to us, even when they are out of reach.

As someone who grew up Seventh Day Adventist this is a must read book.
Revisado: 07-27-23
This story has put into words so many of the feelings I have had in my own family.
The lights are a minor part of the story it’s about dealing with death and moving on after loss. I loved every moment of it.

A modern love story for Generation Z
Revisado: 01-18-23
I tend to listen to an hour or two of an audiobook in a day. I started this one yesterday and this afternoon at what normally would be my hard stop for listening I had over two hours left but couldn’t wait until tomorrow to find out what happened.
I felt much more invested in these characters than o normally do. Though this seemed like it was going to be a typical love triangle YA romance novel it was so much more. I love the lack of labels and how complicated relationships are just like real life.
These are such deep and beautiful characters and I love the inclusiveness of identity from race to sexuality without convenient labels.

Historia
All Luis Gonzalez wants is to go to prom with his boyfriend, something his 'progressive' school still doesn’t allow. Not after what happened with Chaz Wilson. But that was ages ago, when Luis’ parents were in high school; it would never happen today, right? He’s determined to find a way to give his LGBTQ friends the respect they deserve (while also not risking his chance to be prom king, just saying). When a hit on the head knocks him back in time to 1985 and he meets the doomed young Chaz himself, Luis concocts a new plan - he’s going to give this guy his first real kiss.

Reminder that the 80s nostalgia from my youth wasn’t so good for everyone.
Revisado: 01-07-22
I really enjoyed this book. David Valdez reminds me of the John Hughes of today. He captures the voice of Gen-Z and presents the world we grew up in, the world of the 1980s to new eyes. I found myself laughing out loud with some observations about the 80s. I had planned to stop listening for same time around lunchtime to watch the news as I usually do but I needed to know what was going to happen.
Time travel stories are usually not as satisfying as this one, this one was a real pleasure from beginning to end.
Highly recommend!
