Historia
Free speech is a human right, and the free expression of thought is at the very essence of being human. The United States was founded on this premise, and the First Amendment remains the single greatest constitutional commitment to the right of free expression in history. Yet there is a systemic effort to bar opposing viewpoints on subjects ranging from racial discrimination to police abuse, from climate change to gender equity. The Indispensable Right places the current attacks on free speech in their proper historical, legal, and political context.

Free speech is our most important right.
Revisado: 11-26-24
This is a well researched and well presented argument for the viewpoint that free speech should be valued by humans because it is essential to being human. A country without free speech protection is not a free country. Without free speech, we have nothing.

Historia
Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in this startling and engaging new work, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millennia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species's existence.

We should be grateful to be living in this day and age.
Revisado: 04-26-24
This is the history I wish I had been taught all my life. Books like this shouldn’t be so hard to come by. They should be A LOT more popular. Steven Pinker uses scientific data and reason to show that all forms of violence have declined since the beginning of history. We are so ignorant when it comes to what life was actually like in the past. This book has given me a glimpse into our past and an appreciation for our present.

Historia
Stoicism, a school of Hellenistic thought founded in Athens in the third century BC, was one of the most sublime philosophies in the history of Western civilization. It is a way of living that focuses on reality instead of fantasy or idealism. According to its teachings, the path to peace and happiness is found in accepting the moment as it presents itself, by not allowing oneself to be ruled by the desire for pleasure or by the fear of pain.

I particularly enjoyed ’On Anger’ by Seneca. It’s a subject most people don’t really think about. I’m going to get a paper copy of it.

Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Elon Musk is a champion of the human race.
Revisado: 11-08-23
Elon Musk was a hero of mine before I read this book. After reading it, he is even more so a hero to me.
My daughter has Asperger’s. I believe that my experience raising her has helped me to understand Elon Musk’s quirks and unusual personality. This added to my enjoyment of the book.
I’m always inspired by hardworking geniuses who improve the world. Elon is a prime example of this type of human. Walter Isaacson is a phenomenal author who knows how to bring the reader into the world of someone who is larger than life. My personal thanks to him. I highly recommend this book!!

Historia
In this series of lectures, professor Eric H. Cline delves into the history of ancient Greece, frequently considered to be the founding nation of democracy in Western civilization. Ancient Greece lives on in modern culture, evidenced by an ever-present fascination with the tales of Homer, Greek drama, and the stories associated with Greek mythology. In the rise of Sparta and Athens, people today find a wealth of material for understanding not only ancient Greece, but the modern world.

Historia
Every one of us contains a billion times more atoms than all the grains of sand in the earth’s deserts. If you weigh 150 pounds, you’ve got enough carbon to make 25 pounds of charcoal, enough salt to fill a saltshaker, enough chlorine to disinfect several backyard swimming pools, and enough iron to forge a 3-inch nail. But how did these elements combine to make us human?

My jaw is on the floor. Wow. I am in awe of the nature of existence. This book tells the story of scientists’ discovery of things that are so incredible, I struggle to truly appreciate them. Such a good book. I’ll be chewing on this one for a while.

A bit wordy at times but so worth it!
Revisado: 07-30-15
I must admit that it took two different attempts of starting this book to actually make it through. There are parts at the beginning where I wondered if the author would ever get to the point. Honestly though, once the action started with Ben-Hur, I was engaged the entire time.
Great performance by the narrator as well. I am so happy that I persisted with this book, to me it was well worth it.
