Historia
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Narrator makes this great

I guess I got what I was looking for — a rom com (heavy on the rom) in audiobook form. Narration is bar none. Twists and turns and a little suspense — and a midwestern setting. It kept my attention!

Historia
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Empathy wrapped up in a rom com

This one hit a little close to home, resembling some family history. AND I’m a nurse. Very well done. Thank you!

Suspenseful and plot twisty
Revisado: 09-01-24
Surprises await as you navigate this book along its winding path! Narration is excellent, and makes up for some of my unsuspended disbelief. I think I loved the two mains a little too much.

She had me at dedicating the book to nurses and never let me go. I couldn’t stop listening to it — commuting yes, but in the shower, in the garden, in the barn.. What a book! Thank you for this.

Good storytelling
Revisado: 04-09-24
Spoiler alert
As always, I do like how McFarlane writes. Her way of capturing the human character is unmatched. The narrator was great, catching the writers sardonic tone nicely. But as much as I admire this writer’s style and abilities, I did not care for how the grabby scene in the bar was handled, not during or after. I suspect I’m much older than her or her audience, but this was a molestation and deserved more than a knight in shining armor with a right hook. Disappointing really. As women, we let men get away with way too much and this is one example. It happened to me in middle school and I still regret not informing someone and remember it like it was yesterday. People cannot touch other people’s bodies. Usually her messaging is so much more astute, but I’m still bothered by this and how she wrote everyone’s reactions — in fact it took me out of the story.

Creepiest fairy tale ever
Revisado: 03-10-24
Retrospectively, it was a very creative fairy tale conglomeration. It morphed Snow White and the dwarves hilariously. Wolves and woodmen were pitted against each other in a battle of the ages. All while a little kid was on his epic journey to grow the hell up. I was about 1/3 through when I came close to not finishing.. but I persevered. The narration is excellent. But it felt like it took forever!

I can’t get enough of this writer!
Revisado: 02-15-24
There is something about McFarlane’s style that is just really appealing. She fleshes out her characters and backstories. Each of them is complex. And all of her stories have an important message, beyond your typical “don’t judge a book by its cover”, which is also a common theme. I’m American, and have enjoyed feeling like I’m learning about English/British culture listening to her books as well. Similar but not the same, and the vocabulary has been so fun. Highly recommend. I’ve loved each of the narrators, thinking each time that “this one” was the best — they are all so good!

New fan of this author
Revisado: 01-17-24
This is the 2nd novel I’ve read by McFarlane and I just really like her style. Fun to listen to, realistic, but also more than a superficial rom com. Heavy things happen to her characters. I’m American and I have to say I love listening to the British narrators of these two books (Don’t You Forget About Me was the other so far). When I find myself looking for reasons to listen to a book besides in my car, I’m hooked. Thank you!
