Jane Seymour: The Boring Queen
Revisado: 08-04-20
While this book seemed to follow a timeline more directly than her previous novels, Jane was probably my least favorite of his wives so far. She is much too self righteous and pious and that made her immediately annoying and hypocritical to me. All in all, she was irritating and boring. Unlike Anne Boleyn, who is probably the most hated but is my favorite, Jane was unoriginal and too easily malleable. Despite the fact that she did go up against Henry regarding religious reform, she was quickly quashed and refused to bring up the subject again. While I can't imagine what it's like to have the king's wrath hovering over you, Anne managed to at least make some waves and changes before meeting her end. Jane always just seemed cowardly. But I realize that this is all simply my opinion of one woman as opposed to the book and the writing. I do feel that her writing as a novelist leaves something to be desired since the most enjoyable part of this book for me was the author's note at the end which included a lot of historical information. As a historian she seems much more comfortable and as a novelist she comes off unsophisticated. I can see improvement in this novel but the subject matter overshadowed it.

For this mirror of female perfection he will set aside his queen and all Cardinal Wolsey's plans for a dynastic French marriage. Anne Boleyn is not so sure. She does not welcome the king's advances; she knows that she can never give him her heart.

No Depth but still kept me hooked
Revisado: 07-18-20
I understand, after reading this novel and Katherine of Aragon that this is just Weir's style: sporadic, abrupt and slightly repetitive. However, my biggest concern was that the timeline just didn't seem to add up. There was one moment when it felt like Anne was 18 and the next chapter (which was only supposed to be the following year), she was all of a sudden 20. It just didn't flow well and along with her abrupt endings and beginnings it was almost as hard to follow as Katherine of Aragon. However, it did feel like she was improving in the aspect of extraneous details. This novel didn't feel quite as rambling which was a nice change of pace. Or perhaps I just had slightly more interest in Anne Boleyn. I also felt that she got far more justice in this book than any other I've read. I finally got to see her as a human being and a woman and not just as this vile seductress which I don't believe she was. She was pragmatic and ambitious and even now this is, at times, frowned upon for women. My final complaint is the depth of character development. Not a single character aside from Anne was multidimensional. Every single supporting character was shallow and predictably one note. It was interesting enough that I will keep reading the rest of the series in hopes that her writing will continually improve.

Long-winded but interesting
Revisado: 07-05-20
I was hoping to like this more than I did. The writing was colloquial and not very skilled. The sentences were clipped and segments of the story ended very abruptly only to jump to another portion leaving me scrambling to understand what had happened. It was also a bit redundant and unnecessarily long as I feel a lot of the details were superfluous and could easily have been left out in favor of some much needed brevity. As a historian I'm sure Alison Weir is wonderful since a lot of this read like a history book. But as a fiction writer, there is a lot of area for improvement. I just hope the rest of her books improve with more practice.

Went on way too long
Revisado: 06-22-20
I enjoyed the book, however it really was extended far beyond what was necessary. It was starting to get redundant. It honestly just felt like Gregory was trying to find unnecessary drama to add to the story. Yes, some of it was historically pertinent and thus needed to be in the book but other areas were simply elongated for seemingly no reason. The whole back and forth indecision of King Henry was starting to get annoying and the fact that something was constantly going wrong with Anne's plans to marry him made me roll my eyes one too many times. The thing that irritated me the most though was Gregory's clear disdain for Anne. She didn't even bother trying to hide it. She made her out to be this petulant, annoying, absurdly ungrateful, and ill-tempered child. I'm not a stickler for historical accuracy in historical fiction and I know a bit of the actual history and Anne was some of those things but it was exaggerated beyond believability. She was just not written to be even remotely relatable or likeable. It was frustrating to have such an important character be so irritating and two-dimensional. She could have written her to be so interesting and like the fascinating woman she was but she definitely chose to let her feelings shine through instead of remaining impartial. I know this review seems more negative than the 4 stars I gave the book but the bright side is that it was usually well written and the other main characters (George and Mary) were great if a little daft. The story itself was really interesting and it kept me interested most of the time so I gave it a mostly positive review. The narrator was really good at doing the different female voices and making each character clearly distinguishable but her male voice could definitely use some work.

Worth a read!
Revisado: 06-06-20
I've had this in my collection for probably about a year. I never read it because it wasn't really my favorite genre but I'm so glad I finally gave it a shot because this was fantastic. It was moving and gripping and just suspenseful enough to keep you hooked. Although the ending was a bit contrived it did wrap things up nicely. It wasn't rushed or felt unfinished, I just wish it felt more natural and realistic. But in the grand scheme of things it was a minor issue and I would gladly recommend this book. I can't wait to read the rest of Allen Eskens' books. Oh and the narrator for this book was phenomenal. His acting was controlled and reflected the Joe's own character beautifully.

One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. What an ending!
Revisado: 04-25-20
Wow! Just wow! I can honestly say I did not see that coming at all. I suspected everyone except the person who actually was responsible. It was so beautifully written (but kind of a slow starter) with so many well planned twists and turns. Despite that it did not feel convoluted or forced but very creative. And unlike a lot of suspense book endings, it didn't feel rushed whatsoever. It gave the story proper closure. And the narrators were spectacular! So believable!

Vulgar but Good
Revisado: 04-14-20
I watched the show on Netflix and I have to say by the end of this book, Joe was MUCH less likeable than the TV version. And Beck was MUCH more annoying. But Santino was such an amazing narrator. It was gripping and interesting despite knowing how it would end. Caroline Kepnes really does know how to weave a twisted web. My only complaint was how profane and vulgar it was right from the get go. I'm not puritanical by any stretch of the imagination but there are certain words that I just hate being used and they were definitely overused in this book. However, that will not keep me from reading the next book.

Italo Calvino imagines a novel capable of endless mutations in this intricately crafted story about writing and readers. If on a Winter's Night a Traveler turns out to be not one novel but 10, each with a different plot, style, ambience, and author, and each interrupted at a moment of suspense. Together they form a labyrinth of literatures, known and unknown, alive and extinct, through which two readers, a male and a female, pursue both the story lines that intrigue them and one another.

Narrator was great
Revisado: 04-09-20
While it was amusing and funny at first, it started to get old when the same obstacle kept repeating itself. By the half way point I was getting pretty exasperated and antsy for the book to just end especially with the random and uncomfortable pornographic scenes. It was very intellectual and sharp but just a little to random and unfocused for my taste. The narrator did a great job though.

You should warn people!!!
Revisado: 04-05-20
I'll start with the narration. I really love Grace and she was a fine narrator for Coralie. However, the main narrator was not to my liking. All her words were clipped and devoid of emotion. To portray a feeling she would just talk faster instead of using inflection. And when she was meant to be speaking as one of the characters it was awful! No one would ever talk like that.
Kind of spoiler alert!!
As for the book itself, I kept getting angrier and angrier during the last couple of chapters. It was just cruel and painful to read. The entire book was a case study of evil. I know the world is hard and it was even harder back then but I honestly cannot read books where there is this level of disdain for life. Had I known that the peak of this would be this brutal, inhumane, and devoid of empathy I never would have picked up the book. Objectively I understand that this was meant as a stark contrast to the beautiful and gentle nature of a few of the characters but it's just not something I can stomach. Despite the peaceful ending, the vivid descriptions of death in this section of the book ruined it all for me. I wish I had a sturdier stomach and a more objective nature because that way I would have given this book at least 4 stars because it was well written and only had a few issues I could complain about (i.e. realism clearly did not factor in to this love story) but I guess I draw the line at animal slaughter. I honestly almost can't fault the writer with this but whoever wrote the description of this book. You really should prepare people for this.
