Acerca de esta escucha
The Commander in Chief of the United States Central Command from July 2000 through July 2003, General Tommy Franks made history leading American and Coalition forces to victory in Afghanistan and Iraq, the decisive battles that launched the war on terrorism.
General Franks retraces his journey from a small-town boyhood through a lifetime of military service, including his heroic tour as an Artillery officer in Vietnam, where he was wounded three times.
Drawing on military records declassified for this book, Franks offers the first true insider's account of the war on terrorism. He puts you in the Operations Center for the launch of Operation Enduring Freedom just weeks after 9/11, capturing its uncertain early days and the historic victory that followed.
When President Bush focused world attention on the threat of Iraq, Franks seized the moment to implement a bold new vision of joint warfare in planning Operation Iraqi Freedom. Rejecting Desert Storm-style massive troop deployment in favor of flexibility and speed, Franks was questioned by the defense establishment, including Secretary of State Colin Powell. Yet his vision was proven on the ground: Within three weeks, Baghdad had fallen.
Franks describes the covert diplomacy that helped secure international cooperation for the war, and speaks frankly of intelligence shortcomings that endangered our troops, and of the credible WMD threats that influenced every planning decision. He offers an unvarnished portrait of the "disruptive and divisive" Washington bureaucracy, and a candid assessment of the war's aftermath. Yet in the end, as American Soldier demonstrates, the battles in Afghanistan and Iraq remain heroic victories, wars of liberation won by troops whose valor was "unequalled by anything in the annals of war".

Historia
In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,000-foot peak of a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness, alone with the enemy closing in on three sides, beginning the most difficult and exceptional fight of his life.

12 Strong is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators as they rode into the city. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn.

In April 2021, an urgent call was placed from a Special Forces operator serving overseas. The message was clear: Get Nezam out of Afghanistan now. Nezam was part of the Afghan National Army’s first group of American-trained commandos; he passed through Fort Bragg’s legendary Q course and served alongside the US Special Forces for over a decade. But Afghanistan’s government and army were on the edge of collapse, and Nezam was receiving threatening texts from the Taliban.

In 2003, the Special Forces soldiers entered an area later called "the most dangerous place in Afghanistan". Here, where the line between civilians and armed zealots was indistinct, they illustrated the Afghan proverb "I destroy my enemy by making him my friend." Fry recounts how they were seen as welcome guests rather than invaders. Soon after their deployment ended, the Pech Valley reverted to turmoil. Their success was never replicated.

They landed in a dust storm so thick the pilot used dead reckoning and a guess to find the ground. Welcomed by a band of heavily armed militiamen, they climbed a mountain on horseback to meet the most ferocious warlord in Asia. They plotted a war of nineteenth-century maneuvers against a twenty-first-century foe. They trekked through minefields, sometimes past the mangled bodies of local tribesmen who'd shared food with them hours before. The men they helped called them brothers. Hollywood called them the Horse Soldiers. They called themselves Green Berets—Special Forces ODA 595.

From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he'd long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

Historia
Kandahar. The ancient desert crossroads and, as of fall of 2001, ground zero for the Taliban and al-Qa'ida in southern Afghanistan. In the northern part of the country, the US-supported Northern Alliance has made progress on the battlefield, but in the south, the country is still under the Taliban's bloody hold and al-Qa'ida continues to operate there. With no "Southern Alliance" for the US to support, a new strategy is needed if victory is to be achieved. Veteran CIA officer Duane Evans is dispatched to Pakistan to "get something going in the South." Foxtrot in Kandahar is his story.

Historia
Thirty-eight years ago Robert Brown launched an upstart magazine from his basement called Soldier of Fortune, which pushed the bounds of journalism to its limits with his untamed brand of reporting - - a camera in one hand, a gun in the other, and soon thereafter he discovered that he’d established a worldwide community. His wildly popular, notorious magazine became an icon for action-seekers in the U.S. and around the world. In this long-awaited book, Brown tells his own story.

Historia
Almost 2.5 million Americans have served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001. C.J. Chivers has reported from both fronts from the beginning, walking side by side with combatants for more than a dozen years. He describes the experience of war today as it is endured by those most at risk - the camaraderie and profound sense of purpose, alongside courage, frustration, and moral confusion mixed with technical precision. In these remote places where the reason for their presence is sometimes not clear, these young men kill or are killed, facing palpable and often constant threat of ambush or hidden bombs....

Some have called him "Lawrence of Afghanistan". To the Pashtun tribesmen he is "Commander Jim", leader of the "bearded ones". He is Army Special Forces Major Jim Gant, one of the most charismatic and controversial U.S. commanders of modern memory, a man who changed the face of America's war in Afghanistan when his critical white paper, "One Tribe at a Time", went viral at the Pentagon, the White House, and on Capitol Hill in 2009.

Excellent, but
General Franks gives a good account his own history, and an excellent account of the wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and particularly Iraq. But as the title indicates, it is written from a dutiful soldier's perspective, with its pluses and minuses. Other than General Powell in his remarkable My American Journey, Franks offers too much technical detail, military speak and acronyms; and too little political context, reflection and criticism of his civilian colleagues and superiors (excluding Richard Clarke). Nevertheless a highly interesting, well written (and read) book which is good entertainment as well as a valuable source for research. I recommend to combine the book with Anne Garrels' Naked in Baghdad, to get the view from the ground. I got the impression that Mr Franks spoke at least parts of the book on tape - so it makes an excellent audiobook. Highly recommendable.

This has to be mandatory reading for all Americans, regardless of politics. It is an outstanding historical work, showing the evolution of modern military tactics and technology, from Viet Nam, the cold war, to Desert Storm in Kuwait, through the multiple mideastern crises, culminating in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Tommy Franks demonstrates his aptitude and unrelenting positive attitude, putting together dual successes in Afghanistan and Iraq, against some rather formidable odds, both on the battlefield and on the polical homefront. It highlights the significance of military command, and tactics, combined with political and diplomatic finesse. It is a tremendous resourse of modern history and politics, revealing some inner secrets of the inter-action and relationships between the President, the "Sec Def", Secretary of State (Powell), and the President's Cabinet. It also reveals the "politics" inherent among the branches of the military. Tommy Franks will be one of the great motivational speakers of our time. His "road to success" story is a classic "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" and an inspiration in this time of media and public scruitny over Iraq.

Great Intro To Audio Books!
I enjoy reading, but find myself with less and less time for it. I found Audible.com and thought I would give it a try. I purchased American Soldier and it was wonderful. Very interesting and certainly very insightful. General Tommy Franks is a true patriot and American hero. I highly recommend this book for anyone following the war and politics today. Since I found Audible, I'm not sure if I will pick up a printed book again. Thanks Audible.

Half truth form a dutyful insider
A very comprehensive/consistent, though subjective/incomplete account slightly seasoned with military jargon and technical details for better credibility . The answers to complex questions of modern history good for a lieutenant locked in the Vietnam jungle sound primitive from a Commander in Chief developing victorious warfare innovations in the Middle East theatre. Readers interested in a more adequate/balanced picture of the reality are advised to read this book together with e. g. "Intelligence Matters" by Senator Bob Graham and Jeffrey Nussbaum.

A True American Hero
My daughter attended General Tommy Frank's Four Star Academy and met this incredible American hero. He is an inspiration and his leadership continues today. I enjoyed this book very much. I wish all Americans would listen to this book to counter the misinformation we continue to hear more than a decade later. God Bless Tommy Franks.

Excellent
This is an excellent modern soldier's autobiography. Well written and well narrated. Franks' story is very interesting (and very different from what I expected) and gives you a glimpse behind the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. A better read than Powell or Schwarzkopf's works I think.

America salutes you General Franks
This is an incredible book about an incredible man. It is real life Tom Clancy and an unpartisan view inside our current administration. We should be proud of General Franks, our military and our current armed forces in harms way. I see more truth in this book words than the Hollywood propagandist and media mouthpieces. I highly recommend this book to you.
