INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Sandwich is joy in book form. I laughed continuously, except for the parts that made me cry. Catherine Newman does a miraculous job reminding us of all the wonder there is to be found in life."—Ann Patchett, New York Times bestselling author of Tom Lake

“If you like my novels, you will love love love this . . . . I stand in awe, it’s just perfect.”—Elin Hilderbrand, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Swan Song

“A total delight.”—Kate Christensen

From the beloved author of We All Want Impossible Things, a moving, hilarious story of a family summer vacation full of secrets, lunch, and learning to let go.

For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.

This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

It's one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.

Can’t Recommend

Only read if you are really into motherhood. Reminds of a bad Hallmark movie. I didn’t want to finish it, but did. No real story, just on and on about being a mother and menopause.

Disappointed , didn’t love the story or narrator

Very short (good summer read) but disappointing; didn’t love the narrator.. interesting topic but and liked imagining the setting but just didn’t grab me..

Not the Best

I waited for some kind of plot but did not get to one until I decided to return. I did not like the narrator. I was so looking forward to this book but was disappointed.

Painful to get through and not in the good way

I don’t know if I didn’t like this book because of the writing or because of the way it was narrated. I’m not sure if the characters would come off as awful as they did to me had I read the book. Not sure what parts of this book people who said it was funny were referring to as I didn’t find any of it hilarious. Gratuitous use of the word vag and fuck etc seemed out of place to me for some reason. I’m certainly pro sailor talk, but it didn’t work for me here. This wasn’t a story so much as it seemed to be the memoir of a bitter angry woman whose medication clearly isn’t working. She’s an obnoxious human being. Her daughter Willa is an obnoxious human being and so forth. My wife is currently going through her hot flash stage of life and I know there is some part of this woman’s story that is relatable to her, but it sure wasn’t for me.

Tedious

The author describes in tedious detail the everyday existence of what women have experienced in midlife for centuries. There is little to the story aside from a tedious recitation of her family’s week at the Cape mixed with a heavy dose of pro abortion rhetoric.

Whiny story

Whiny story, whiny premise, whiny characters- she makes menopause out to be the death of women. I’m a woman in menopause … not the case.

Did not believe the main character

The main character did not ring true to life. Perhaps the author knows little of anxiety?

Not hillarious - just droned on & on.

Slow moving, not much substance. Could not get into this at all. Nan McNamara was an acceptable narrator - except for the voice of the 20 year old daughter which sounded like a 6-year0-old.

Annoying

I am a woman in my 50s and this is my story, and I hated it! Yes, there were nuggets of wisdom and moments that I laughed out loud because I could completely relate to the hot flashes and menopause, blah blah. But for the most part, I found this story boring and annoying. The main character is so trapped by the nostalgia of her life she can’t move forward! Save your credit for something worthy
