Acerca de esta escucha

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place.

Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes. And it gives the listener a chance to learn things that only Auri knows....

In this book, Patrick Rothfuss brings us into the world of one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world.

What a beautiful feast of a story!!!

I love, love, love it! I love the character I love the storytelling… I love the richness of the word usage! I often found myself backing up just to listen to a beautiful paragraph again and again. I adore Patrick’s stories and I hope he writes more like this because he painted a picture in my mind of exactly what she was doing and what she was thinking and what she was feeling and what she was saying! I give this five on every level because it was just that delicious!

Excellent story!

Despite the author's insecurities regarding the value of this story, I found it to be delightful. My only regret is that it is so short. I hope he writes more about her - I'd love to discover how she came to live in the under thing.

Auri

What did you love best about The Slow Regard of Silent Things?

This story is about Auri. I don't know about you, but whatever Patrick Rothfuss writes, I inhale, listen to, breath again and listen to again. He has a way of writing that is lovely. What did I like best? I liked learning more about Auri. Period. I loved her making soap.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Auri was the only character. Who could want anything more? Unless it is the last book of the trilogy.

Which scene was your favorite?

I am a person who loved to make anything from scratch. I card my wool, spin and either weave it or knit it....so I loved hearing about the soap making. Just an FYI, it is not as easy as Auri does it

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The whole book was moving. It made me cry, laugh, shake my head...total enjoyable. But if you don't read the first two books....it will not make much sense.

Any additional comments?

Mr. Rothfuss probably never reads these reviews...but if he does, I want to say how many hours I have listened to and enjoyed his story of Kvothe. I am going to get the book Rogues, where he writes about Bast. Thank you for being such a talented writer...

Elegant

I loved the way this book is written, it’s loving and magical! I know some very unexpected type A people who loved this as well. I listened and then had to buy it in print so that I could hold onto the words. I want to hold some of the phasing in my head and bring it out for when I need a “grin!”

Engaging and beautifully written

This story is a joy to read. The language, the timing, and the interesting word choices all come together to make this story engrossing and even entrancing. Beyond that, it’s chock full of tantalizing hints about Alchemy, Naming, and what seems like potential world shaping Magics that we’ve only heard stories about. I loved this strange short story, and it makes me even hungrier for The Doors of Stone than before!

Invitation to the UnderThing...not everyone can attend

If you have never lived in solitude, separated from your fellow humans & family of origin, even while surrounded by Them; either by grief or poverty or “mental illness” or just a time of transition that weaves all of those most human of experiences together, then this story is not for you.

If, dear reader, you have never needed to render the secret spirit of all elements & inanimate objects around you to quiet the fight or flight spirit of run from your breath, this story is not for you.

If you have never been a refugee or worse a chosen exile, this story is not for you. If you have never been hungry, you will not “get” it. If you have never been hungry and never told anyone that you were hungry, you guessed it, you literally do not know the mental gymnastics one plays to stay sane.

I was refreshed to hear the author express his misgivings about sharing this snippet of Arie. Has no one wondered what’s a day in the life of this solitary child - woman must contain? Further, how would we ever break into the ark of this character’s story. I am not surprised that some readers have no interest, but after enjoying of 100 hours of story from Patrick Rothfuss why are you irritated by spending 3ish measly hours on 6.5 days of narrative silence walking inside Arie’s head? Arie would slightly frown and say “selfish thing” to all of you. The UnderThing is a very secret exclusive special safe perfect place to be. None of you have been there. None of you know it’s history why it was abandoned, how it relates to Arie or how it will come into play in the future. To justify such strict and distinct boundaries about habitat, associations, behaviors and observations and all of you listeners / readers got an invitation for a front row seat, so again I am surprised at the rejection, even distain I’ve seen in some reviews.

This world Patrick Rothfuss has gifted us is vast & multidimensional. Appreciate that. Get your head around the fact that it is still a good story with good words excellent humor qualitative reasoning rich in illumination short on justification and it’s ok if you aren’t carefully lead through the beginning middle and end with an after school special “what did we learn from this” antidote at the end.

Why would anyone require Arie to “fit” into a traditional story. She is not a traditional Being. Her role is still veiled. Knowing just this small snapshot is a gift, you are not getting short changed. If you have given the three hours and you didn’t see the love, the discipline, the beauty in the break down or respect the naked honesty -it’s ok - this story wasn’t for you. You will never see us or know what we know. You are the kind we watch. You are not allowed in the UnderThing.

PS
Patrick~
🌬 I appreciated the soap.

An amazing story.

"This story is for all of the slightly broken people out there."

A fantastic piece of writing, slightly odd, but thoroughly enjoyable.

I wish I didn't read other reviews first...

Yes, this is not a normal story. I don't care. Mr. Rothfuss, please, write more odd and unusual stories like this. Break the story mold in two.
