Edgar Allan Poe
Acerca de esta escucha
A collection of classic works by Edgar Allan Poe, American author, poet, editor, and literary critic. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.
Includes: "The Unparalleled Adventures of one Hans Peall", "The Gold Bug", "Four Beasts in One - The Homo-Camel-Leopard", "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Mystery of Marie Roget", "The Baloon-Hoax", "Ms. Found in a Bottle", "The Oval Portrait".

This is a story from the Murders in the Rue Morgue (The Dupin Stories) collection. Auguste Dupin, investigator extraordinaire, was the remarkable creation of Edgar Allan Poe. Written in the 1840s, Poe presented the acutely observant, shrewd but idiosyncratic character who, with his chronicler, provided the inspiration for the more famous Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

Each story explores a different twist of madness, murder, and melancholy, from the horror of being buried alive in "The Fall of the House of Usher" to the desperate case of two gruesome killings in "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." The heartbeat of paranoia in "The Tell-Tale Heart," the razor-sharp claustrophobia in "The Pit and the Pendulum," and a mourner's torment in "The Raven" reveal - and revel in - life's creepiest and craziest. These tales are not for the faint of heart or the thin of skin.

Historia
Edgar Allan Poe elevated the gothic story, developed the unreliable narrator, recast psychological terror, and reveled in both the horror and the supernal beauty of death. From Poe's rich, unrivaled imagination comes a collection of his most masterful works, including "The Black Cat", "The Fall of the House of Usher", and, of course, "The Tell-Tale Heart". Each story explores morbid themes of grief, greed, fear, and guilt, and together they embody Poe's grotesque obsessions...even the dread of being buried alive.

The War of the Rebellion is over, and the members of the American Gun Club, bored with inactivity, look around for a new project. At last they have it: "We will build the greatest projectile the world has ever seen and make the moon our 38th state!" When From the Earth to the Moon was published in 1865, it was regarded as pure fantasy. Who could imagine a rocket that would carry men and animals through space?

Herman Melville is one of the greatest figures in literary history. His classic Moby Dick is generally considered the finest novel ever written by an American. Yet in Melville鈥檚 day, Typee was a far more popular book. Largely autobiographical, this classic adventure story is set in the South Seas, where a runaway sailor is captured by the Typees. Described as 鈥渁 fierce and unrelenting tribe of savages," the islanders have no intention of letting their captive go.

On one level...Melville鈥檚 tale is an historical adventure telling the story of life aboard ship shortly after the mutiny at Spithead in 1797. Billy is taken from a homeward bound merchantman to serve on the 鈥楽eventy Four鈥 HMS Indomitable. He falls foul of Claggart, the 鈥楳aster at Arms鈥, and the final confrontation results in death. Billy becomes an unwilling martyr - what passes for justice must be implemented because of the rebellious climate of the time.

Rese帽as editoriales
Poe invented modern suspense. Each emotion that draws and assails human spirit is found in his work. You cannot read a horror novel or see a tragic operatic production without seeing Poe in the shadows. Whether in sing-song rhyme or austere prose, Poe tells pithy and terrifying tales. His writings evoke the Greek tragedies. Poe鈥檚 narrators are dangerously unreliable. No character鈥檚 sanity or decency can be taken at face value. Narrator Nicholas Stikoski reads Poe with utter sincerity. His curious but normal tone convinces you to trust what you hear, until the supernatural weirdness kicks in. Despite knowing the bait and switch, listeners will be lured by the certainty in Stikoski's voice to believe in dire and fantastic characters and events.

Young, impressionable Aubrey is fascinated by the enigmatic Lord Ruthven, and accompanies him on a tour to Europe. But Aubrey develops a growing distaste for Lord Ruthven鈥檚 sinister and grotesque conduct - especially as it concerns human blood. This novella, penned during that tempestuous night in Switzerland amongst such notables as Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, and Mary Shelley, served as the great inspiration for Bram Stoker to create Dracula.

Bored with inactivity following the end of the Civil War, the fanatical members of the American Gun Club in Baltimore look for a project to fulfill their passion for rearms. Their distinguished President, Impey Barbicane, proposes an exciting new endeavor - one that will cement their names in history: They will build the largest projectile ever known to man and shoot it at the moon! The bullet will be hollowed to accommodate Barbicane and two bold companions, along with their dog, and they will claim the moon as America's 37th state.

In the late seventies an extraordinary document came to light which for fifty years had been held on deposit by the bankers of the deceased John Herbert Watson MD - better known to devotees of Conan Doyle as Dr Watson. A continuous narrative in the doctor鈥檚 own hand, the story opens in the East End of London in 1888. Three women have been savagely murdered by Jack the Ripper.

Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Poor narration hurts these Poe classics
What did you like best about The Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Volume 1? What did you like least?
What's not to like about Edgar Allen Poe? These are classic stories with a wide range of appeal. The narrator was so disappointing to me that I have not been able to finish listening to the sories.
What did you like best about this story?
Poe is not all death and murder. His stories range from clever satire, humor, mystery, and early forms of science fiction. There is no other figure in literature like him.
How could the performance have been better?
The biggest problem I have with the narrator is that he makes a loud inhaling sound before he begins a new sentence. By the end of the first story, his breathing noises had become so distracting that I was not even hearing the words anymore. He is not fluent either, often breaking a sentence with a long pause where there is no punctuation to justify it. And finally, he speaks in a subdued, quiet monotone. He does not seem to understand that not all of Poe's writing needs to be spoken with a kind of quiet gravity. Much of Poe's work calls for a tongue-in-cheek delivery. The least he could do is try to inject a little life into it.
Do you think The Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Volume 1 needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I am glad to see more volumes of Poe's work with different narrators.
Any additional comments?
It's too bad that Vincent Price isn't around to give his voice to these stories. After watching his performances in the old movie adaptations of Poe's work, it is obvious that he not only understood the mechanics of the story, but he relished each delicious line.

The language is delightfully dated. Fun to listen to and horrifying as you would expect from the author.
Poe lets the imagination run wild, which is even more horrifying than reading about every claw and splatter of blood on a page.
