Now Stiger, his men, and his new dwarven allies have fallen back behind the great walls of Castle Vrell. Stiger finds himself named Legate of the Vanished, the long-lost 13th Legion. Finishing and starting
Reviewed: 07-05-23
I finished this book but all is not lost, the next is a few clicks away! The accent of the narrator was totally appropriate for the book. I was initially worried about the turn to fantasy from military science fiction, but I got over it and am ready to continue.

Launch of a future legendary piece of work
Reviewed: 06-16-23
I had read this previously as an ebook. It lived up to my expectations and more. The narrator was perfect for this type of science fiction commonly called military epic. I suppose some wanted more a mystical touch - where's the dragon? It seems this book was the staging or launch pad for the entire series and spin-offs. Perhaps this book was indeed written with the Imperium in mind.

Author and Narrator
Reviewed: 05-05-22
The author and narrator have combined to bring the greatness if the book to life. This not always the case, but is here. For example, the contrast of the character and personality of Arson and his father are stark and real. We adore the one and abhor the later.

January 1864: General Robert E. Lee faces defeat. The Army of Northern Virginia is ragged and ill-equipped. Gettysburg has broken the back of the Confederacy and decimated its manpower. Then, Andries Rhoodie, a strange man with an unplaceable accent, approaches Lee with an extraordinary offer. Rhoodie demonstrates an amazing rifle: its rate of fire is incredible, its lethal efficiency breathtaking - and Rhoodie guarantees unlimited quantities to the Confederates. Speculation or Prophesy
Reviewed: 02-05-22
This was an unabridged version of the paperback I read when it was originally published. Having served in the United States Air Force (in tactical and management positions) and the Churches of Christ (as an Evangelist or Preaching Minister) I found myself identifying with one character then another, except for Molly Bean or the store keeper (Mr. Drucker in Hooterville?).

Narration was outstanding, including gender distinction - males sounded like males and so on. The aliens grew as characters in good character qualities and got to be almost respectful to the hoo-mons. The Emperor character hopefully be fleshed out in the next book, in fact, I REALLY HOPE SO!

I smiled a lot

I smiled a lot when I listened to this book. I color while listening to audio books. This stimulates and enhances both, you should try it. I like the fallibility of the male lead. I enjoyed the strength of the female characters. Even as a cat parent I loved the human animal bond. I highly recommend this book.

An exciting military Science Fiction novella set between Mike Shepherd’s third and fourth Kris Longknife novels. Kris Longknife dodges assassins, gains an unwelcome (though rather handsome) bodyguard, and puts together a training squad to travel from planet to planet, preparing crews for the newest, fastest, and deadliest fighting ship.
