The 10th Anniversary Edition Makes It Even Better
Reviewed: 01-25-25
Even though the main piece of the 10th Anniversary Edition is the deleted scene and I agree with its deletion (even though I enjoy reading about it), what really makes this edition even more special than the original is how much love Mr Sanderson shows for it and he says it hold a special place in his heart and how it came to be.

Story
The dentist was found with a blackened hole below his right temple. A pistol lay on the floor near his out flung right hand. Later, one of his patients was found dead from a lethal dose of local anaesthetic. A clear case of murder and suicide. But why would a dentist commit a crime in the middle of a busy day of appointments? A shoe buckle holds the key to the mystery. Now - in the words of the rhyme - can Poirot pick up the sticks and lay them straight?

Interesting Rhyming Theme

I rather like the addition of the old nursery rhyme with this book, it kept me thinking about how the part will be applied to the book.

In the delightful Cotswold village of Carsely, the air is heady with romance. Agatha Raisin is convinced that the new vet has taken a shine to her. But before she can get anywhere, handsome Dr. Paul Bladen is accidentally killed while attending to Lord Pendlebury’s horse. So was it really an accident? All the evidence points that way, but the circumstances are decidedly suspicious....

Not an Agatha Christie Mystery, But Still Good
Reviewed: 12-22-24
This book didn't quite capture the same feeling the first book did, not that either was quite as good as Agatha Christie. It seems like the first one had a few more ups and downs it, while this one went mostly down. Not that it has terrible writing or anything like that, it just seemed to be telling a story, nothing more, like two neighbors chatting about the goings on of the neighborhood, not a proper mystery.

The good Doctor Dolittle, accompanied by his devoted animal friends, sets sail once again. This time it is a voyage of discovery, to learn the secret of the Shellfish language, and to teach Tommy Stubbins, the Doctor's young protege, all there is to know about animals and their languages. Choosing their destination by opening an atlas, closing their eyes, and touching the page with a pencil, they set off on the most amazing voyage.

Creative, Imaginative
Reviewed: 12-19-24
Although this book changed the way the series is narrated (from a third person omniscient to a second person), it still continues the thoughtful storytelling of the first. I think the writers of the Dr. Dolittle movie with Robert Downey Jr may have lightly based their movie on this book, emphasis on lightly. The basic premise is the same between the movie and this book though. I think it is to be more thoughtful and kind.

Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stood serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence was damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity, and the means to administer the fatal poison. Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, only one man still presumed Elinor was innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot was all that stood between Elinor and the gallows.

Murder Mystery Love Story
Reviewed: 12-13-24
Romance has been a part of other Agatha Christie novels, but I think this novel did it best, at least from what I've read so far. This book doesn't make it needy, sordid or tawdry, just sweet and caring, I very much appreciate this attempt to make out love as it truly should be and especially how Hercule Poirot respects it too.

Story
Among the towering red cliffs of Petra, like some monstrous swollen Buddha, sits the corpse of Mrs.Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist is the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. With only 24 hours available to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalled a chance remark he'd overheard back in Jerusalem: "You see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" Mrs. Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he'd ever met....

In the title work in this collection of novellas, Poirot and Inspector Japp collaborate on the investigation of a suspicious suicide. The supernatural is said to play in the disappearance of top secret military plans in The Incredible Theft—an incredible claim, indeed, as Poirot will prove. The bullet that kills Gervase Chevenix-Gore shatters a mirror in Dead Man's Mirror—just the clue Poirot needs to solve the crime.
