Story
Though unappreciated in his own time, Johann Sebastian Bach has ascended to Olympian heights, the verdict of contemporary audiences long since overruled by succeeding generations of music lovers. But what makes his music great? In this series of 32 lectures, a working composer and musicologist brings his exceptional teaching skills to the task of helping you hear the extraordinary sweep of Bach's music. You'll understand the compositional language that enabled him to compose such extravagant, unbridled music while still maintaining precise control of every aspect - beat, melody, melodic repetition, interaction, and harmony.

I highly recommend this course. I enjoyed Greenberg’s lectures, his sidebars and opinions of which he is not shy. The selections of music reopened my appreciation for Bach as a musical genius

Story
The iconic image of Beethoven is of him as a lone genius: hair wild, fists clenched, and brow furrowed. Beethoven may well have shaped the music of the future, but he was also a product of his time, influenced by the people, politics, and culture around him. Oxford scholar Laura Tunbridge offers an alternative history of Beethoven's career, placing his music in contexts that shed light on why particular pieces are valued more than others, and what this tells us about his larger-than-life reputation.

Engaging, interesting, nice format

I really liked the nine chapter format with each chapter revolving around a particular piece(s) of Beethoven’s music. This prompted me to listen to more Beethoven than I had before. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I hope to find other biographies of classical musicians that use the same format. Highly recommended!

I found this book to be interesting. The stories about personal habit reconstruction we’re revealing and potentially personally impactful. However some of the organizational stories while very interesting And even captivating seemed to stretch the habit loop theory the author presents.. Especially useful was the appendix around about modifying a person have it.

Story
The Blind Watchmaker, knowledgably narrated by author Richard Dawkins, is as prescient and timely a book as ever. The watchmaker belongs to the 18th-century theologian William Paley, who argued that just as a watch is too complicated and functional to have sprung into existence by accident, so too must all living things, with their far greater complexity, be purposefully designed. Charles Darwin's brilliant discovery challenged the creationist arguments; but only Richard Dawkins could have written this elegant riposte.

As a novice in this subject, I found the lectures interesting and engaging. Great stuff to listen to while vacuuming the house. The downside of course is inaccessibility of any appendix or bibliography. Finally the www.modernscholar.com website mentioned in the course does not seem to exist as of July, 2021.
