Mailer tour de force!
Reviewed: 01-17-24
The writing left me jealous of Mailer’s talent. It is as if the words fell onto the page from above. Effortless to read because of the quality of the writing.
Captured the paradox of war, the physical difficulties, the long periods of waiting and anticipation and fear, and the bursts of violence and emotion that followed.

Story
The hero of John Updike's Rabbit, Run (1960), ten years after the hectic events described in Rabbit Redux (1971), has come to enjoy considerable prosperity as Chief Sales Representative of Springer Motors, a Toyota agency in Brewer, Pennsylvania. The time is 1979: Skylab is falling, gas lines are lengthening, the President collapses while running in a marathon, and double-digit inflation coincides with a deflation of national confidence.

Great writing

Updike has written a real classic of the white American experience. Self absorbed protagonist lives a comfortable life almost by accident, bumping through life, damaging family and oblivious to the reality around him.
