Very Busy Story!!
Reviewed: 01-07-25
There is a lot going on in this story, with multiple people and POV’s. Very well developed story line, with all kinds of surprises popping up throughout. All this plus a fast paced clip kept me totally involved and interested all the way through. The narrator gets a full solid 5 stars with his ability to seamlessly shift from one accent to another. This really added to my listening enjoyment!

Righteously Twisted!!
Reviewed: 12-24-24
I thought this book was quite good! A lot better than I was expecting and, in my opinion, better than her first book, “Baby Teeth”. If you like stories about twisted mental crazies, you should enjoy this.
It does start out a little slow, but not so slow it loses the reader’s attention. About half way through or so, (in the middle of the garden party, for those just dying to know), this thing really takes off, and just gets better and better from there, until reaching the shocking conclusion. I did figure it out, but only moments before it hits you smack in the face like a wet dish towel!

It is a hot summer in rural Ireland. A child is taken by her father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again. In the Kinsellas' house, she finds an affection and warmth she has not known and slowly, in their care, begins to blossom. But there is something unspoken in this new household—where everything is so well tended to—and this summer must soon come to an end.

Story
The year is 1869. A brutal triple murder in a remote community in the Scottish highlands leads to the arrest of a young man by the name of Roderick Macrae. A memoir written by the accused makes it clear that he is guilty, but it falls to the country's finest legal and psychiatric minds to uncover what drove him to commit such merciless acts of violence. Was he mad? Only the persuasive powers of his advocate stand between Macrae and the gallows.

Superbly written and executed!
Reviewed: 12-15-24
This book was a 2016 Man Booker Prize winner, which speaks volumes right there about the quality of the writing. I didn’t know what to expect here but, after perhaps a somewhat slow
Introduction, I became completely taken in and mesmerized by the story and the subject matter. The narrator, with his beautiful Scottish brogue, contributes mightily to the overall experience.
This is by no means a happy story, as you can already surmise by the title and cover art; in fact, again pretty obviously, it is quite the opposite: dark, humorless, and very, very gloomy.
I would also like to warn listeners that, a bit well into the story, a great deal of bloody and very disturbing violence does occur. This occurrence, while disturbing, is endemic to the story and vitally necessary for the full impact of the story as it moves forward. Having stated this warning, I would definitely urge listeners to embark on this journey anyway so as not to miss out on one of the most important and memorable pieces of literature I have had the honor of engaging with in quite some time.

A great good old fashioned blockbuster!
Reviewed: 12-02-24
I really enjoyed this book by one of the most popular, most prolific, and most well loved authors of the 1960’s. A real good old fashioned blockbuster! A fictionalized account of the very early beginnings of the motion picture industry. They just don’t write ‘em like this anymore! The narrator was great(!). A perfect choice for this story.

Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

Okay
Reviewed: 11-11-24
This book was ok. It kept my attention all the way through, but nothing about it was particularly outstanding. Worth what I paid for it, which was $1.99 (!!). I thought it would be a steal, because Peter Swanson is a good author, and has done very good work in the past. It was rather violent and disturbing, however, and I had to de-recommend it to a friend who I had urged to buy it at the sale price! 🫤

Story
In the spring of 1903, locomotive 311, known as the Majestic, carried more than one hundred passengers toward a tunnel through the underbelly of the Canadian Rockies. But then the mouth of the tunnel swallowed the 311 whole, and the train—and everyone on it—was never seen again. Seven years later, a gang of cattle thieves and cutthroats wait on horseback for a train car full of railway cash—a payroll they intend to steal. What they will discover, however, is that the approaching train isn’t the 5409. It’s the missing 311, a train only whispered about around dying campfires.

Reviewed: 11-09-24
There were a number of really excellent, funny, and entertaining scenes in this story, and at least one or two very colorful characters. However, too much of the time I found myself a little bored and unable to fully pay attention to the confusing scenes. R C Bray, as always, was really great, giving an excellent performance! I don’t know if I would necessarily recommend this book…🫤

Held My Interest…
Reviewed: 11-02-24
This story did hold my interest all the way through. However, while it started out quite good, it slowly devolved into a disappointing degree of silliness. 😕
The narrators (one male, one female) were pretty good, with the female narration far superior.
Would I recommend this book? I would say it’s okay for light listening, if you are in the mood for something not too taxing on the brain!
