'Tis the season in Paterson, New Jersey: Lawyer Andy Carpenter and his golden retriever, Tara, are surrounded by holiday cheer. It’s even spread to the Tara Foundation. The dog rescue organization, not used to having puppies, has their hands full with a recent litter. Eight puppies are a lot to handle, and Andy is relieved when his co-worker Chris Myers agrees to foster them. Myers, a newer employee at the Tara Foundation, did time for a crime he swears he didn’t commit. When Myers discovers a key witness against him lied on the stand, he goes to Andy to ask for representation.

I really enjoy the Andy Carpenter series and this one did not disappoint!
I did figure out the "motive" early on, pretty obvious in my opinion. But, who was behind it was a bit of a surprise.
As always Grover Gardner does a great job of narrating.

Story
Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter usually tries to avoid taking on new cases at all costs. But this time, he's happy - eager, even - to take the case that's just come his way. Andy's long-time friend Martha "Pups" Boyer takes in stray puppies that the local dog rescue center can't handle, raises them until they're old enough to adopt, and then finds good homes for them. Not everyone admires the work Pups does as much as Andy does, however.

Andy Carpenter never fails to entertain. This is one series I have not tired of and I have read a lot of them, not necessarily in order.
This one was surprising in the "who done it" department.

Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.

Tedious - too wordy - too long
Reviewed: 11-06-24
This was way too tedious for me. After listening for 5 hours I decided just to fast forwarded thru so much to get to the end. Tho the end was predictable.
I was very interested in the plot of the two families, but for every 5-10 minutes spent on the main characters there was 15+ minutes (and then some) spent on describing a tree and its crooked arm, or a blade of grass, or the birds.
I admit I am more character/story driven and all the the time spent on describing something made it too tedious for me, especially 19 hours of listening.
That said, the narrator did a decent job. But I don't think I will read another book by the author. Her style is just not for me.

2 separate stories - both kept my interest
Reviewed: 09-27-24
This listen actually consisted of two different books. Each story deals with search and rescue dogs. Light romance in both stories.
The first, Mountain Survival by Christie Barrit deals with a park ranger and her dog who come across a man who has an injured - and then missing - brother. They get caught up in the mountains during a bad weather system with "bad men" on their tails. I found the characters naive (believing the bad guys would evenutally let them go) and also very lucky considering all the predicaments they found themselves in. Still, for a quick read it kept my interest
The Second was Search and Defend by Heather Woodhaven which again deals with a forest ranger and her dog and the FBI agent who was her deceased husband's partner. Together they try to find out who is targeting/framing all of the forest ranger's friends. I thought this story was predictable but still it kept my interest. I wanted to see how/when they figured it out.
The narrators for both stories were very good.

What an enjoyable read/listen!
A very easy read with a bit of drama and a bit of a mystery and a small bit of romance.
A great story about how family can be comprised of more than just blood relatives
Tho I do give it 5 stars I either missed something or it was never made clear why Mary Kate's mother left.
Now on to the next book in the series!
Audio was very well done.

Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

Just finished listening to Long Island by Colm Toibin and have to say I am very disappointed! Without giving away any spoilers when the book finally ended, and rather abruptly, I kept rewinding to see if I missed something.
I will say, it was not as good as Brooklyn, in my opinion, but was keeping my interest. All I will say is that I am very disappointed in how it ended - or should I say did NOT end.
The narrator on this one was just ok. They should bring back the narrator of Brooklyn, Kirsten Potter.

Another great book from Sara Goodman Confino.
Great book for women empowerment and what they are capable of.
A lot of humor in the story, with a bit of drama. Quite a bit of history of women's place in the world at the time and how it can/will change.
Yes it is about the political process but not boring at all. The author did make it humorous as well as informative/educational. Definitely a book I would recommend.
Can't wait for her next book!
