Great story and best narrator
Reviewed: 07-01-23
I had already read this book ten years ago, but enjoyed listening to it now even more. Not only does the narrator give real life to the characters, but he is Japanese mother language and pronounces every Japanese term correctly, without butchering words. I look forward to listening more books by him.

Story
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Subtle, ironic, delicate writing style. The reader is perfect too. One of Ishiguro’s best works.

It is not only absurd but ridiculous for he has to read excerpts in French, German Italian and even Spanish. The book has too much data, a paper copy offers a better overview of what is being said. Otherwise it is very well written and informative.

Strange original book
Reviewed: 07-27-21
This book is quite strange. Written by a woman who depicts two despicable women and a hoard of men, seems kind of unwarranted. The last fifty pages were composed of fragments with barely paragraphs, which she could have embedded within the text.
I think the story is original, the characters are interesting and curious, but the narration is extremely repetitive.
Nothing happens in the scenes: life is lived through someone else’s story, it’s always before or after, and there’s very little action.

I enjoyed listening to it, the narrator was funny and made great voices. His accents were not disturbing. Still, i wonder, if in the 21st century we still need books about evil “indians” perpetuating the greatness of britain against other nations.

Hans Castorp is, on the face of it, an ordinary man in his early 20s, on course to start a career in ship engineering in his home town of Hamburg, when he decides to travel to the Berghof Santatorium in Davos. The year is 1912 and an oblivious world is on the brink of war. Castorp’s friend Joachim Ziemssen is taking the cure and a three-week visit seems a perfect break before work begins. But when Castorp arrives he is surprised to find an established community of patients, and little by little, he gets drawn into the closeted life and the individual personalities of the residents.

The reader is wonderful: he speaks german moreover, which makes the reading of german names easier and pleasant for the reader (who does not have to “squint” his years to understand what is being said: see the soul mountain by gao xingjiang read by a reader who does not speak chinese bleark). I look forward to starting the buddenrbooks, same author, same reader!

Story
