Story
Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Wasn't expecting the ending, so that made it nice. Sometimes hard to get through but it was okay 🙂

Help Wanted: Grumpy Mountain Man seeks baby momma. Job is an incubator position only. Surrogate must be impervious to grunting in the form of communication and nosey brotherly neighbors. Rustic mountain range housing available upon request. I wanted to pummel my irritating brothers when they posted their own version of a wanted ad to help me with my life. But I can’t fault the results once the right woman lands on my lap. Becoming a single father is not a decision I made lightly. In fact, it’s the biggest decision of my entire life.

Story
Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city - a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent - but he's one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.

My first novel from this author was Gallant and I was obsessed so I thought I would try another! It had a slow start but Im glad I gave it time. It was good. I wouldn't read it again but purchasing a physical copy for my library. Glad I didn't give up on it.
The end was unexpected and I love authors that keep you guessing.

I made a terrible mistake. Being a mafia princess, I knew my fate was already decided. But I went ahead and longed for the wrong one. Creighton King is bad news with a gorgeous exterior. He’s silent, brooding, and obviously emotionally unavailable. So I thought it was over. Until he awakens a beast inside me. My name is Annika Volkov, and I’m Creighton's worst enemy. He won’t stop until he breaks me. Or I break him.

I actually finished and it shocks me how annoying and privileged Annika is. Cray is definitely a character you can cling to but that's where the possibilities end. Definitely comes with trigger warnings.

I felt like I was constantly on the fence about this one: but once i start a book I finish. I'm glad I did. The ending for me was unexpected and appreciated. The epilogue was predictable was it was great to hear a comforting ending to a somewhat shakey storyline.

Alex Volkov is a devil blessed with the face of an angel and cursed with a past he can't escape. Driven by a tragedy that has haunted him for most of his life, his ruthless pursuits for success and vengeance leave little room for matters of the heart. But when he's forced to look after his best friend's sister, he starts to feel something in his chest. Ava Chen is a free spirit trapped by nightmares of a childhood she can't remember. But despite her past, she's never stopped seeing the beauty in the world . . . including the heart beneath the icy exterior of a man she shouldn't want.

Maybe the other books are better
Reviewed: 07-23-23
I really don't understand all the chatter about this book. The female narrator's voice is horrible and annoying. When reading instead of listening to one chapter, I got a totally different feel of the character.
The story line . . . what you think is going to happen happens, and at some points I laughed out loud because Ava was just ridiculous. Maybe the series overall is better, but as a standalone, I would not recommend this first book.
