Story
In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

What a Life!
Reviewed: 08-06-24
I just started reading/listening to (auto)biographies within the past few years. I "gobble up" books, but was never very interested in this kind. I picked this one because I love Viola Davis- she is indeed my favorite actor.
Having grown up in a home with many issues mostly due to my single parent father's alcoholism, I can empathize with her early life.
She tells her story as I'm sure no one else could. Despite all of the obstacles and issues she faced, she came out on top. Oh, and she is beautiful.
If you want to hear a raw, honest, real life story, give this one a listen.

Story
Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter - she doesn't behave like most children do. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well.

Unusual and Well Written

This was a book unlike any other I've ever read or listened to. The story of Blythe, Fox, and Viole(n)t is one that makes you think of how we sometimes don't address the obvious when it comes to our children's behavior and the consequences that occur as a result. Reaching back to the stories of Etta and Cecilia from the past gave context to the present occurrences. All of the characters, including the sweetheart Mrs. Ellington, in whom Blythe found acceptance and love, were well developed and necessary for the story to be told. I loved this book.

Story
Kiara and her brother, Marcus, are barely scraping by in a squalid East Oakland apartment complex optimistically called the Regal-Hi. Both have dropped out of high school, their family fractured by death and prison. But while Marcus clings to his dream of rap stardom, Kiara hunts for work to pay their rent—which has more than doubled—and to keep the nine-year-old boy next door, abandoned by his mother, safe and fed.

The Realness Was Overwhelming
Reviewed: 06-23-24
Many times when something terrible occurs, the victim's story is not fully heard. The story is often told from the viewpoint of someone else (who was involved or not) with a spin towards a specific agenda. That was not the case here. Kiara was a young lady who had no choices on how to survive, who was exploited, dismissed, disregarded, sex trafficked, abused, and seen as less than a real person. What she endured was terrible and criminal. But she survived, was loved by others and showed love. The story isn't real, but it really is. The author excelled in telling it. I hope to hear much more from her.

Story
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

James McBride writes some of the best books, and Deacon King Kong was no different. I love how all of the main characters have separate stories that are intermingled. This book is about love, forgiveness, redemption, faith, friendship, hope for the future, and so many other things. In the end, it seems that everyone got what they desired, although it took some really bumpy roads to get there.

This is one of the best books I have ever read/listened to (and there have been hundreds over my past 40+ adult years). The story was narrated so well that I could "see" everything and everyone who was integral to the story. I cried at the descriptions of killings, child abuse, loneliness, hopelessness, beatings, etc. Even si, the intermingling of the stories of Lowra and Dikimbe were perfect and the end was beautiful.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

This is one of the best books I've "read" in the past 30 or so years. All of the main characters are developed so you know a lot about each one. The book kept me engrossed in the lives of the people on Chicken Hill, hating the discrimination against them, but cheering their perseverance in the hardest of times. I cried so hard when I reached the epilogue, forgetting that the characters were fictional. Wonderful book!

Through the haze of vodka and self-loathing, Hazel Roundtree saw the poor creature lying in a ditch. One brown eye. One blue. Covered in mud and crying from pain, the puppy was desperately trying to free itself from a hopeless situation. She almost kept walking by. She had her own problems, and besides...no one had ever stopped to help her. Hazel had no idea the dog would be her beginning, her second chance, the miracle she never saw coming.

This was an very good book that my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed. Red herrings everywhere and no end to the surprises. It fell apart a little at the end with Delilah being held captive next door to her own home for 11 years, but overall, kept our attention for the entire read. We are now looking for more by this author.

Story
At 72, Johnny Ribkins shouldn't have such problems: he's got one week to come up with the money he stole from his mobster boss or it's curtains. What may or may not be useful to Johnny as he flees is that he comes from an African American family that has been gifted with superpowers that are a bit, well, odd. Okay, very odd. For example, Johnny's father could see colors no one else could see. His brother could scale perfectly flat walls. His cousin belches fire. And Johnny himself can make precise maps of any space you name, whether he's been there or not.
