Story
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

I truly enjoyed this audiobook and would definitely say that it kept me interested, but it did become a bit monotonous after awhile since the whole story was written in letter form… I needed to take breaks inbetween, when usually, I plow through a book in just one or two sittings. The performances were all superb, and I certainly learned a lot about the island and its people during and after WW II. Each of these characters was a hero and brought so much to the time and place. I will now be watching the movie version on Netflix. ðŸ‘?ðŸ?¼ðŸ‘?ðŸ?¼

This is a Christmas story that is perfect for the whole family, and definitely highlights the importance of helping others in their time of need and not just playing it safe. This book was recommended by multiple people on a podcast, and I am really glad I took the time to listen to it .

Story
Duchess Day Radley is a 13-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Rules are for other people. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids. Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. And he's in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.

The story kept me interested, and wanting more, but the narration was nothing worth bragging about. It was average at best. Never before have I read or listen to a book by this author, but based on the fact that the story kept me engaged, I plan to now try All The Colors Of The Dark.

Clove has gone to extremes to keep her past a secret. Thanks to her lies, she’s landed the life of her dreams, complete with a safe husband and two adoring children who will never know the terror that was routine in her own childhood. If her buried anxiety threatens to breach the surface, Clove (if that is really her name) focuses on finding the right supplement, the right gratitude meditation. But when she receives a letter from a women’s prison in California, her past comes screeching into the present, entangling her in a dangerous game with memory and the people she thought she had outrun.

Heard from a podcast that this book was terrific so thought I would give it a listen. Unfortunately, the story was extremely disappointing but at least the narration was OK. To me, personally, the story seemed far-fetched and situations happened much too conveniently. This time, the podcast got it wrong !!!

Story
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

The story is quite long and I didn’t really enjoy the love story parts, but I did appreciate the interesting subject matter of whether or not Shakespeare actually wrote his work or if a female counterpart was in fact responsible for the many plays we know of. Until this book, I was not at all familiar with the controversy. I can definitely recommend listening to this audiobook, and truly believe it will both entertain and educate you. Enjoy!ðŸ‘?ðŸ?¼ðŸ‘?ðŸ?¼ðŸ‘?ðŸ?¼

Story
Home alone with her young children during a blizzard, a mother tucks her son back into bed in the middle of the night. She hears a noise—old houses are always making some kind of noise. But this sound is disturbingly familiar: it’s the tread of footsteps, unusually heavy and slow, coming up the stairs. Shrouded in the shadows, she sees the figure of a man appear down the hallway. Terrified, she quietly wakes her children and hustles them into the oldest part of the house, a tiny, secret room concealed behind a wall.

I kept hoping the story would improve, and that we would learn what the relationship was between the mom and kids with the intruder… Yes, we did find out who the intruder was, but there was no real tie to the family. I honestly felt like the story dragged on and on, and that the performance just wasn’t enough to keep me engaged.

Too Many Suspects
Reviewed: 09-25-24
Despite enjoying the performance and the overall story, I felt like there were just too many potential suspects and that the author was really trying to confuse the listener. This story needed to be taken with a grain of salt and simply enjoyed for what it is. I definitely would not give it another listen in the future, so with that being said, I’m probably going to return the audiobook and use the credit for something more believable… I did find a flaw with a particular interaction, but can not specify what I’m referring to without there needing to be a spoiler alert. Good luck and have fun reading.😞👎

A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Not the greatest narration, but did enjoy the beautiful story!!! There was absolutely no voice inflection , and sadly, the performer just presented the story in a monotone way. If not for the story, being heartwarming and engaging, I think I probably would have fallen asleep numerous times.

Absolutely loved this book and narration! It definitely exceeded my expectations! Despite not really knowing the story of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, I wanted to give it a try, primarily based on the summary and the incredible sample performance. I have already suggested to my husband that he read the book, and we have just purchased the hardcopy from Amazon . Personally, I think the audiobook is the best!!!

Important Issues Addressed

Just like The Girl With The Louding Voice, this is a beautiful story that is well told by the same performer. Her many voices and accents/dialects really makes you feel as though you are listening to a multi cast narration. As for the writing, it shines a light on several serious issues of harsh treatment for girls in small villages, and truly brought tears to my eyes when listening. It’s necessary that we learn how life still is in other parts of the world, and help to create change through education and hard work. Definitely get this audiobook, but be aware that it is sometimes difficult to fully understand parts that are said because of the strong accent and lack of context. ENJOY!
