SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND
- By Jim "The Impatient" on 01-02-15
a bit juvenile but a good story
Reviewed: 12-31-24
I read a lot of apocalyptic literature but this was my first theater style performance which has its pros and cons compared to more novel like stories on Audible. although I didn't care for the main characters at first but they grow on you as the story goes on. The beginning is probably the weakest part of the story as it goes from day one to what seems likes months into the outbreak even though it's only been a few days. to be honest this is a common issue of the genre and not just this story. The most unbelievable thing in the story infact is that a small California gun would have grenades and other explosives. Being a Marine who was stationed in Southern California I laughed a little to hard when they said there was no military bases in the area. details will be the death of you if you focus on little details. Not sure it's worth credit but if you find the series on sale or free it's worth a listen.

Story
The dead have risen, and they are hungry. Slow and plodding, they are legion. The undead hunt the living. Stop and they will catch you. Hide and they will find you. If you have a heartbeat, you do the only thing you can: You run. Survivors escape to an island stronghold: a cop and his daughter, a computer nerd, a garbage man with a piece of rebar, and an escapee from a mental hospital with a lifesaving secret. After reaching Alcatraz, the ever-expanding group of survivors realize that the infected are not the only threat.

worth listening to if you catch it for free. the intro to the book is pretty bad and I almost put it down but glad I kept with it. I still laugh how he described cop pistol whipping someone as if it was technical strike that was in a training manual.
There are a couple POV and although it follows many zombie tropes there is a bit of uniqueness in the characters and story to justify one's time. frankly I am glad that it didn't make the military and law enforcement completely stupid. still like many other zombie stories the author struggles with the start of how the apocalypse happens and jumps ahead of what would be weeks if not months into Z day. although it's best not to overthink to much regarding such details.
I did look up that it is part of a 3 book series which books 2 and 3 are not on audible as of yet. I would probably only listen to the rest of the series if it was free or a package deal.

Story
It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

has its flaws but a good story
Reviewed: 09-21-24
Apocalyptic books are a guilty pleasure and it's hard to find a good series especially in the zombie/zombie like category. It's important not to think to much for there are a lot of things that will drive you crazy. One example and this one is because I am a gun guy but no one who knows anything about guns will tell a guy to just shoot from the hip Arnold style. Still that aside the story is pretty good and keeps you engage where you can push past details that don't add up. Usually I get burned out around book 5 in such series but I finished all 10 books and will buy the next one in the series. That says a lot for me and probably deserves a 5 star review just for that alone. Not as great as all the reviews suggest but still well worth the time to get invested into.

Story
In Enemies and Neighbors, Ian Black, who has spent over three decades covering events in the Middle East and is currently a fellow at the London School of Economics, offers a major new history of the Arab-Zionist conflict from 1917 to today. Laying the historical groundwork in the final decades of the Ottoman Era, when the first Zionist settlers arrived in the Holy Land, Black draws on a wide range of sources - from declassified documents to oral histories to his own vivid on-the-ground reporting - to recreate the major milestones in the most polarizing conflict of the modern age from both sides.

I watched a few brief historical summarization of the the conflict before listening to this book where I am glad I did because it really did help visualize the events and separate the conflict into parts. At times the narrative is left leaning but does try to keep things balanced between Israel and Palestine. The book goes up until the Trump administration and I wish it covered at least part of his administration other then a single quote that the author critized. That aside it's worth reading for those looking for more in depth look at the conflict.

Story
John Quincy Adams was the last of his kind - a Puritan from the age of the Founders who despised party and compromise yet dedicated himself to politics and government. The son of John Adams, he was a brilliant ambassador and secretary of state, a frustrated president at a historic turning point in American politics, and a dedicated congressman who literally died in office - at the age of 80, in the House of Representatives, in the midst of an impassioned political debate.

A bridge from founders to pre Civil War
Reviewed: 07-28-24
I decided to pick up pick up John Q Adam's biography after reading one regarding his father and thought it more appropriate before reading one on Jackson and have already read those of the Presidents in-between. As for biographies go I would rate this one somewhere in the middle. This does not make it bad in fact I found it very enjoyable and the information is unbiased and detailed. My only real complaint is I wish the author took a little more time going over events and figures to give more context to the history of the time. This is a small gripe and I am sure there are readers who would disagree for the story is paced well and easy to fallow. As someone who also reads up on Pre Civil War history this is a biography I didn't know I needed.

Story
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Reviewed: 06-24-24
First off I am not a fan of the unabridged and the pauses and mouth noises reminds us at times why it is important to edit things out. Still despite it being a little slow in the beginning this is truly a great account of not only Adam's the founding father but the early stages of American history. Having read both Hamilton's and Jefferson's biography I really appreciate the non bios viewpoint or if nothing else Adam's perspective. Having watched the HBO series I felt I didn't need to read his biography and I regret waiting as long as I did. There is also a lot on his wife Abigail, which is not necessarily bad but one can wish that these figures of history wrote more things about their lives so we can read about it in the future.

David M. Potter's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Impending Crisis is the definitive history of antebellum America. Potter's sweeping epic masterfully charts the chaotic forces that climaxed with the outbreak of the Civil War: westward expansion, the divisive issue of slavery, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown's uprising, the ascension of Abraham Lincoln, and the drama of Southern secession.

A must read for anyone interested on the Civil War
Reviewed: 04-17-24
I have read several books on the Civil War but I admit I didn't know much about the history between the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. Yes I knew about figures like John Brown and the raid on Harper's Ferry, James Buchanan's presidency, and the significance of Lincoln's election but Impending Crises does an excellent job giving the proper perspective of the people of the time along with the social impact of the communities between the North and South. The cause of the Civil War is often of much debate even today and if nothing else this book reminds us that history is a bit more complex then a one cause reason and it is important to understand events on how the people of the times saw them not those of today with all the hindsight and modern view points.

I picked up this because I was curious about another series by the author and I didn't want to invest in a long collection just to find out I dislike the author. I don't normally go for apocalyptic books that fallow a group of teenagers but I did enjoy the world building the author took in how the world was falling apart instead of jumping right into the collapse. I did have a few issues with the end as well but not because of what happened but the straight forward telling regarding character development which seem to counterdict itself a bit in my opinion. It may be because I've read some really bad apocalyptic books lately but I really enjoyed this intro and interesting to find out more about the author. There are concerns with this specific story arch as the characters continue their journey but it's really nice that the author gave a sample and I may come back for book 2 down the road.

A great companion to Chernow's Hamilton Biography
Reviewed: 02-23-24
I have read biographies of several founding fathers and other great figures of the time such as Lafayette and Napoleon. This is a well researched and telling not only of the figure but the early years of the country that is so important to understanding how the country country was formed, how it grew and the struggles such as slavery, natives, and other disputes that will play a bigger role in the young country. There are a few biases more notably when discussing the Federalist party but not enough to not point out flaws in Monroe himself. With that said this is a perfect companion piece to Chernow's biography Hamilton and Washington which is more then I can say for the Jefferson biography I read by Meacham. This is also a great introduction to figures like John Quincy Adams or Andrew Jackson which are next on my reading list.
